September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating the simple test that saves thousands of lives every single year.

It’s a heel prick that checks for more than 30 serious but treatable health conditions. This screening gives babies the best chance at a healthy start by catching issues before symptoms even appear.

It’s , and this year’s theme is “Work. Pump. Advance. Empowering the modern parent.” 🤱 At WIC, we support working parents by providing breast pumps, peer support and lactation experts, nutritious food, and personalized food packages to support your breastfeeding goals.

We believe breastfeeding parents should be able to feed their babies or toddlers (or pump/hand express milk!) at work, school, and in public with respect and support. Learn more about your breastfeeding rights: dcwic.org

WIC celebrates our breastfeeding peer counselors today and every day🥰! Their support and knowledge guide and uplift the community. Lisle Cole can be found at Mary's Center and encourages moms to be patient with their journey and expect the unexpected. She shares that "when breastfeeding my last baby. I wish someone would have told me to be patient and expect the unexpected. I never thought my baby would be born almost 2 months early and have to spend time at the hospital. I went every day to the hospital and was lucky to have breastfeeding support from my husband and the nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit also called the NICU. My days began at 6am at the hospital until 7pm at night for one month. It was patience and wanting my baby to be healthy that got me through every breastfeeding challenge." We thank Lisle for sharing her story and for supporting WIC families every day!❤️

Metro Microgreens was founded in 2017 by Mark Ross and his wife Debbie. Our growing facility, located in Rockville, Maryland, provides microgreens to local farmer's markets and restaurants around the Washington, DC region. Since our founding we have steadily grown within our current facility by using their space more efficiently to grow more varieties of microgreens. We currently grow over 20 different varieties of hydroponic microgreens. Our first farmers’ market in Washington DC was Palisades Farmers’ Market and we have grown steadily to 22 markets in DC, MD and VA! Metro Microgreens is a “Certified Naturally Grown” farm. All of our seeds are non-GMO and use the safest growing methods to provide our customers with the tastiest and healthiest microgreens. We grow hydroponically on a coco coir medium so there is no soil to rinse off. Our microgreens are sold living with the greens still attached to the coco coir so they remain fresh and nutritious for about 2 weeks compared to just a few days for pre-cut microgreens. Metro Microgreens is a sustainable farm and has been recognized for its many sustainable achievements over the years by Montgomery County.
