Association of Medical Device Reprocessors AMDR advances reprocessing of single-use medical devices, to reduce emissions, cost and waste

Trade association representing the industry interests of third-party medical device reprocessors.

For over 25 years, AMDR has fought to protect reprocessing from relentless attacks by some original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who view our industry as a threat to their “take-make-waste,” or disposable business model. But while these companies have consistently failed to destroy us through...

Nearly 2K and surgical centers saved almost a half billion dollars and cut by over 98MM pounds (44.5MM Kg) in 2023 thanks to regulated, commercially reprocessed “single-use” (SUDs), the latest AMDR Member Survey shows. See our release: https://ow.ly/rwkv50TMMHx

“AMDR members partner with hospitals to dramatically reduce cost, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions by using regulated, reprocessed SUDs,” said Daniel J. Vukelich, President and CEO, Association of Medical Device Reprocessors. “While these numbers are record setting and robust, they represent only a small fraction of the reprocessed devices that hospitals could use.”

Explore this groundbreaking data, made available through AMDR's free greenhouse gas emissions calculator, to learn why hospitals and surgical centers in the United States and 14 additional countries, along with every U.S. health system except for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital system, embrace regulated R-SUDs.

AMDR is pleased to see the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VHA) called out for the wasteful practice of using only virgin devices when U.S. Food and Drug Administration-regulated, reprocessed devices are as safe, effective, and available. They cost less too. It's time for the VHA to stop wasting taxpayer money.

Celebrate by exploring AMDR’s new CO2 calculator, powered by research from LCAs that show “single-use” (rSUDs) reduce at hospitals by an average of 44%: https://ow.ly/CQaG50RkQlJ

The calculator gives sustainability managers a free tool to track and lower emissions at hospitals by using rSUDs.

"We have long had the science to prove reprocessing is safe, and more recently because of peer reviewed life cycle assessments, we know they substantially cut emissions compared to using virgin devices," said Daniel J. Vukelich, President and CEO, AMDR. "But now, we’ve created a free calculator tool – available for all to use – so that hospitals everywhere can approximate how much they are reducing their carbon footprint by using reprocessed 'single-use' devices."

By using rSUDs, AMDR members help nearly 10,000 slash pollution-causing waste from the medical supply chain while saving costs and critical resources.

"LCAs have been providing valuable data and insights in other industries for decades, and we're proud to help translate this science into meaning for hospitals," said sustainability researcher Cassandra Thiel, PhD, President and CEO of Clinically Sustainable Consulting. "Based on the research, a switch to more reprocessed devices is a straightforward way for hospitals to reduce their carbon footprint."

As world leaders gather in Dubai for to on solutions that limit the impact of climate change, now is the time to reverse the EU Medical Device Regulation’s (MDR) opt-out default provision for single-use device , a simple innovation that helps extend the lifespan of medical products and build resilience into medical supply chains. Read AMDR President and CEO Daniel J. Vukelich, Esq., CAE’s latest article: https://ow.ly/Qh9o50QgbUT

Opting into the EU MDR will make it easier for countries like France, Austria, and Poland to fulfill their commitment to advance decarbonization in the health sector, allowing hospitals to use regulated, commercially remanufactured, CE-marked that research shows could help them cut by as much as 60%, slash waste, and lower spiraling costs.

Learn why we believe the opt-out default provision of the EU MDR is an anti-competitive policy that forces EU hospitals to generate huge amounts of waste and emissions that hurt the planet, harm public health, and needlessly drive up costs in a time of great financial strain.
