Statement from MSDC President Dr. Klint Peebles on the passing of Dr. Scott Ferguson:

The Medical Society of DC joins the entire House of Medicine in mourning the passing of Dr. Scott Ferguson. A tireless and deeply respected advocate, his commitment to preserving the integrity of the physician-led care team was unwavering. Our physician community is thankful for his many years of service and partnership, especially for the invaluable mentorship he provided to many members of the MSDC AMA delegation. A true champion for patients and the ability of physicians to take care of them, he represented the best of our profession and will be truly missed. We extend our heartfelt sympathies and thoughts to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

MSDC Mourns the Passing of Past President Dr. John Niles

MSDC joins the entire medical community in the passing of Dr. John Niles. A celebration of his life will take place tomorrow at Howard University's College of Medicine.

Dr. Niles served as MSDC President in 1990. His tenure was marked by a passionate advocacy for private practice, medical malpractice reform, and women's health. For years, Dr. Niles was a frequent speaker and testifier before the District government warning of the collapse of private practice - especially in Ward 8 - and its impact on care for all residents, but especially the less fortunate. He was a child of the District, graduating from Spingarn High School and serving as the first Black chief of staff for Columbia Hospital for Women.

"Dr. Niles' passing is a huge loss to our community," said MSDC President Dr. Klint Peebles. "Looking back on his statements and letters, he was a prophetic voice warning DC that failure to revise its malpractice laws and support physician practices would lead to many of the health disparities we continue to see today. He was a pioneer and his spirit of being unafraid to speak the truth should be an inspiration to all physicians."

MSDC members, guests, and DC leaders gathered at the historic University Club yesterday to celebrate the Societys annual meeting of members. Special guests included high-ranking physicians in the DC government, leaders from state and national medical societies, and multiple past MSDC presidents.

A big thank you to Councilmember Christina Henderson and Councilmembers Alllen, Anita Bonds, Frumin, Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, Brianne Nadeau, Parker, DC Councilmember Brooke Pinto, Trayon White, and Chair Phil Mendelson for introducing legislation to reform downcoding in DC medicine. This is a top priority for the physician community and we look forward to speaking up and out about why this bill is so important.
