Best time to take CoQ10

Morning: A great default, especially if you take it for energy and cellular function.

With lunch: Another good option if you prefer taking supplements later in the day.

With a fat-containing meal: Include foods such as eggs, avocado, olive oil, nuts, or fatty fish.

Avoid taking it right before bed if you notice that it makes you feel more alert or interferes with sleep.

💊 Taking a statin? Let’s talk about CoQ10! ❤️

If you take a statin medication to manage your cholesterol, CoQ10 may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

Here’s why 👇🏽

🫀 What is CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring compound that helps your cells produce energy and supports mitochondrial function.

💊 How are statins connected?
Statins work by inhibiting an enzyme involved in cholesterol production. This same pathway is involved in your body’s production of CoQ10, so statin use may lower circulating CoQ10 levels.

✨ Why consider supplementation?
Some research suggests CoQ10 may help with statin-associated muscle symptoms, but the evidence is mixed. It is not a guaranteed solution for muscle aches or weakness.

🩺 My functional medicine perspective:
Your medication, symptoms, nutrient status, and overall cardiovascular health all matter. Supplementation should be individualized—not one-size-fits-all!

⚠️ Remember: Never stop your statin or change your dose without talking to your prescriber. If you develop new muscle pain, weakness, or unusual fatigue, discuss it with your healthcare provider.

The Vital List: Nutrients Depleted by Medications 💊🌿

Your medications may be helping you feel better, but have you ever considered how they might affect your nutrient status?

Certain medications have been associated with changes in nutrient absorption, metabolism, or levels over time. For example:

💊 Metformin — can reduce vitamin B12 levels
💊 PPIs (acid-reduducing medications) — may affect magnesium, vitamin B12, and iron absorption
💊 Statins — can lower CoQ10 levels
💊 Long-term corticosteroids — can affect bone health and calcium metabolism

And that’s just the beginning!

As a naturopathic doctor, I believe in looking at the whole picture—your medications, symptoms, diet, lifestyle, and lab work—to help you make informed decisions about your health.

🌿 A few things to remember:
✔️ Not everyone taking these medications will develop a deficiency.
✔️ The risk depends on the medication, dose, duration, and individual factors.
✔️ More supplements aren’t always better. Targeted testing and personalized recommendations matter.

The goal isn’t to stop your medication. It’s to make sure your overall health is being supported, too. 🤎
