Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown, born September 28, 1954.

A physician, minister, medical missionary, and community leader, Dr. Garmon-Brown broke barriers as the first Black woman to complete the family medicine residency program at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. She went on to become a respected healthcare executive and the first African American elected president of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society.

Her commitment to health equity extended far beyond her clinical practice. Dr. Garmon-Brown co-founded the Charlotte Community Health Clinic to expand access to care for uninsured and underserved patients and provided medical care through mission work around the world.

Today, on her birthday, we celebrate Dr. Garmon-Brown’s trailblazing career and enduring commitment to compassionate, equitable healthcare.
