Ever wonder what follows when a whistleblower is silenced? 🚨

In South Africa, the story often ends with forgotten promises. The initial uproar fades, and the much-needed aftercare—accountability and transparency—never comes. We're left with the chilling reminder of the risks of speaking out.

Imagine if REAL aftercare existed. What would that look like for our nation?

Babita spoke up in 2021. The country only heard the full story years later.

Aluta recalls Babita Deokaran, who was murdered after raising concerns about suspicious payments linked to Tembisa Hospital, and asks the question many South Africans carry: is it really worth it to be a whistleblower when the institutions that ask you to speak are the same ones that fail to protect you?

What would protection need to look like for you to feel safe speaking up?

“They find it offensive when we tell them the truth.”

Guest Charles Okafor, founder of Mastery EQ, argues that leaders who cannot accept constructive criticism lack the emotional maturity for power — and that any politician without emotional intelligence is already disqualified.

Should emotional intelligence be a requirement for public office?

Ever wonder who truly enjoys freedom of expression? 🤔

Our constitution promises this right to everyone, but who really gets to speak up without fear? For many, privilege determines their voice.

What would help you feel safer to express your thoughts? đź’¬

Silence is expensive — and most of us are paying the price without even noticing.

What makes an honest voice feel too costly to use? On World Mental Health Day, Dr. Wesley D. Willis and Aluta Gaulana sit down to explore psychological safety, political fear, and the real cost of speaking up. From the Madlanga fallout to the quiet tension at the family table and the meeting room where nobody says what's actually on their mind — we ask what people need in order to be heard safely, and what institutions owe those who tell uncomfortable truths.

You can take a break without giving up your voice.

Aluta argues that supporting one another should sit alongside public accountability. Wesley adds that being tired does not weaken a person’s claim to a functioning service. Tomorrow we take the next question further: what does it cost to speak up?

What would make it easier for you to ask a difficult question?

When we say “resilient,” what part of the story are we missing?

Wesley reflects on how his view of resilience changed after living in South Africa. He explores the strain that may sit behind coping, including a hypothetical example of depending on a difficult family relationship for practical help. This is a conversation about experience, not a diagnosis.

What do you wish people understood before telling you to be strong?

Aluta shares how having another place for laundry made a difference during tough times with unreliable water. But what about those who don't have that option?
