When Helia was 13 years old, she was diagnosed with an intracranial germinoma on her pituitary gland -- a type of brain tumor.

The following year was filled with chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries, blood transfusions, and countless hospital visits. Much of her teenage life was spent in treatment and recovery instead of the experiences most young people take for granted.

Today, Helia is in remission and pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology. As a 2026 Children's Cancer Cause College Scholar, she's combining her personal experience and professional training to support other young cancer survivors.

"Cancer can be incredibly isolating, and creating community among survivors can be a powerful step toward healing," says Helia. Her advocacy project focuses on creating opportunities for adolescent cancer survivors to connect, learn, and heal together through peer support and wellness-focused programming.

Helia is one of 23 cancer survivors receiving a scholarship from us to help with academic expenses in the coming school year. 🗣️ Special thanks to Hyundai Hope on Wheels for supporting our survivorship work and helping us grow our College Scholars Program 👏

House and Senate appropriators are in the midst of hearings to determine funding levels for Fiscal Year 2027, which begins on October 1.

For children with brain tumors, federal research funding is especially critical this year. The recent loss of funding for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC) threatens a research network that has led innovative early-phase clinical trials and advanced promising therapies for children with brain tumors for more than 25 years.

Brain Tumor Awareness Month is coming to a close, but the fight for better treatments continues. Join us in urging Congress to protect and strengthen federal investment in pediatric cancer research -- it's quick and easy when you follow the link in our comments.

Mental health care for childhood and adolescent cancer survivors is a pressing unmet need: nearly one-third of survivors we surveyed last summer identified it as the most critical support that is lacking and urge for it to be a standard part of survivorship programs.

May is . What do you wish more people knew about cancer and mental health?

At 15 years old, Kaleolani’s life changed with what first seemed like something minor: a persistent fog in his vision. He thought it was maybe eye strain from too much screen time.

It was a brain tumor, a low-grade glioma on his right optic nerve.

Between chemotherapy treatments, hospital visits, and mounting uncertainty, he remained committed to his education and graduated high school as salutatorian. He began college at UCLA while still undergoing active treatment, scheduling classes around medical procedures.

Today, Kaleolani is bringing greater visibility to pediatric brain tumors through advocacy, public speaking, and nonprofit volunteerism. He is passionate about improving healthcare policy and access, the driving factor in pursuing a degree in political science.

“I want to thank Children’s Cancer Cause and Hyundai Hope On Wheels for believing in my journey and believing in me, so that I can achieve my legislative policy goals one day.”

Over the next several weeks, we'll introduce you to all 23 survivors receiving a scholarship from us in 2026 -- starting with brain tumor survivors like Kaleolani, because May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month. 👏🎓🎗️

At just five years old, Parker’s life changed dramatically after his family noticed subtle symptoms that led to a brain tumor diagnosis.

What followed were years of treatment, 19 surgeries, chemotherapy, and countless hospital visits.

But Parker’s story is also one of resilience, purpose, and hope. Today, he's pursuing nursing and advocating for childhood cancer survivors as part of the 2026 Children’s Cancer Cause College Scholars Program.

Over the next several weeks, we'll introduce you to all 23 survivors receiving a scholarship from us in 2026 -- starting with brain tumor survivors like Parker, because May is . Today is DIPG Awareness Day. Approximately 300 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with DIPG every year, and most will live less than a year after diagnosis.

This unacceptable reality is why we fight so hard to protect cancer research funding and the ongoing DIPG clinical trials -- because kids deserve a chance and families deserve hope.
