In high-risk patients with severe or persistent infection, relapse may affect up to 1 in 2.

Read that again: up to 50% of patients in this high-risk group may have the infection return after treatment.

For some, that means another course of treatment. For others, treatment may continue for months or even years.

It’s clear that both patients and clinicians need better evidence to guide care when babesiosis keeps coming back.

Babesiosis doesn’t always look the way people expect.

In this clip, shares the story of a patient whose symptoms led him to consider Babesia as a possible diagnosis.

Her experience shows why awareness needs to include the many ways this infection can appear, especially as babesiosis reaches more communities. Recognizing the possibility sooner may help patients get answers sooner.

The map of tick-borne disease risk is changing.

Blacklegged ticks are covering more ground – bringing the diseases they can transmit into more communities.

By 2015, blacklegged ticks were established in approximately twice as many U.S. counties as they were in 1996.

That means more people may now be living, working, hiking, and raising families in places where exposure to Lyme disease and co-infections such as babesiosis is possible.

It also means old assumptions about where tick-borne diseases occur may no longer reflect the full picture.

As the ticks move, awareness has to move with them. Because knowing that risk exists is the first step toward recognizing an infection sooner.

By the end of 2023, the evidence surrounding tafenoquine and babesiosis had reached an important turning point.

Laboratory studies, animal research, and early patient cases had given researchers a reason to keep looking.

But promising early evidence can only take us so far.

The next step was to study tafenoquine in a more structured way – with real patients experiencing different forms of babesiosis.

In this clip, 60 Degrees Pharmaceuticals Founder, Dr. Geoff Dow, explains how that growing body of research led us to launch three clinical trials evaluating tafenoquine across severe acute, relapsing, and chronic babesiosis.

Seven patients had already been treated for babesiosis. All seven had seen the infection return.

These were some of the most difficult cases to treat. Every patient had a weakened immune system, and conventional treatments had not been enough to keep the infection from coming back.

Across two small studies, tafenoquine was added to treatment regimens containing atovaquone and other antimicrobial medicines. Treatment continued until testing showed no detectable Babesia parasites.

The result?

All seven patients experienced symptom resolution, negative PCR testing, and no evidence of infection during follow-up after treatment ended.

Summer may be ending. Tick season isn’t.

As the tiny nymphs of summer become less active, adult blacklegged ticks begin their fall stretch – and they can still transmit Lyme disease and co-infections such as babesiosis.

That means fall hikes, yardwork, leaf piles, dog walks, and afternoons on the sidelines can all come with possible tick exposure.

And cooler weather does not necessarily stop them. Adult blacklegged ticks can remain active whenever temperatures rise above freezing.

So, no. It is not time to retire the tick checks just yet.

Keep using repellent. Check yourself, your children, and your pets after spending time outside. And remember that the habits that protected you in July still matter in October.

Fall may be near, but tick awareness is important all year round.

For patients living with chronic babesiosis, fatigue can feel a lot more than simply feeling tired.

It can be severe and persistent– even when the initial infection and treatment are months behind them.

Yet there is still no FDA-approved treatment specifically for chronic babesiosis.

That is why we launched B-FREE.

This Phase 2 clinical trial is evaluating tafenoquine in patients with chronic babesiosis and severe, persistent fatigue.

Our goal is to better understand whether treatment can help patients recover from fatigue while also clearing the Babesia parasite.

Because patients living with chronic babesiosis deserve more than questions. They deserve research built around the symptoms affecting their lives.

Part of the problem is visibility.

When a disease is undercounted, its true impact is easy to underestimate. And when that impact is underestimated, the need for better research, recognition, and treatment options may not receive the urgency it deserves.
