Unconscious bias doesn’t require bad intentions—and that’s exactly why it can be so difficult to recognize.

In this podcast preview, Dr. Sara Tariq explores how our culture, upbringing, and environment can quietly shape the way we practice medicine—and why physicians need to be willing to examine the biases we may not even realize we carry.

Awareness is where better care begins.

This moment reminded me why I chose a different way to practice medicine: one with the time and space to truly be present with my patients.

When medicine becomes rushed, care can start to feel transactional. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can give a patient is simply the time to truly understand what they’re experiencing.

Some of the most meaningful parts of medicine happen during the hardest moments.

Being trusted to walk beside someone through difficult decisions, recovery, and uncertainty is a privilege I never take lightly.

Messages like this are a beautiful reminder of why I chose this work. 💚

Sometimes the diagnosis is the easy part. The real care happens when we have the time to listen, untangle the fear and confusion, and understand what an illness means in a patient’s life.

The Hidden Curriculum. 📚

Dr. Sara Tariq — internal medicine physician and longtime medical school dean — on the unwritten lessons students absorb just by watching what gets excused. You're taught to be ethical, compassionate, professional... and then you rotate into a culture where a few bad apples act poorly and are never held accountable. One unprofessional attending. One episode of harassment. One racist comment left unaddressed. That's all it takes to change a student.

Rice, naan, and roti don't have to go. Small swaps go a long way. Here's where I'd start:

🍚 Cut back on refined carbs (white rice, naan)
🌾 Bulk up on fiber, like lentils, veggies, and whole grains (swap in whole wheat pita/roti)
🥑 Choose healthy fats: nuts, olive oil
🩺 Get your cholesterol checked yearly with your P*P

This isn't about overhauling your diet overnight. It's steady, sustainable habits that protect your heart long-term.
