We’re pleased to announce that Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W. Va.) is the recipient of ADLM’s Outstanding Legislator Award for the 119th Congress. This award recognizes Sen. Capito for her tireless efforts to improve children’s healthcare by advancing the development of pediatric reference intervals.

Pediatric reference intervals help clinicians understand what’s normal in children’s lab results. Unfortunately, the current lack of accurate pediatric reference intervals can lead to incorrect diagnoses and treatments for children.

That’s why we commend the House Committee on Appropriations’ decision to approve the Fiscal Year 2027 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Bill, which includes $5 million for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to improve pediatric reference intervals.

But the fight for better pediatric reference intervals doesn’t end there. Read our latest release to find out what’s next: https://ow.ly/rZtI50Z9XUr

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities experience some of the worst racial and ethnic healthcare disparities in the United States.

From 2008 to 2019, self-identified AI/AN individuals had an average life expectancy of 72.7 years, 6.5 years shorter than the national average. On average, AI/AN individuals are more likely to die from diabetes, heart disease, chronic liver disease, cancer, and su***de than White Americans.

Although sometimes overlooked, laboratory medicine is emerging as an avenue for improving health outcomes in these communities. Here are a few ways labs can help:

• 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 through noninvasive, at-home tests and mobile or remote-friendly solutions that reduce travel barriers.
• 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 with targeted screening programs and better use of family history and risk data.
• 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 by increasing awareness and understanding of key lab tests, especially among younger and high-risk populations.
• 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 with tribes to design culturally relevant outreach, communication, and care strategies.
• 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 by respecting data sovereignty, honoring community values, and ensuring informed consent in research and care efforts.

Congratulations to William P. T. M. van Doorn, the 2026 winner of the ADLM General Research Grant award! This grant supports early-career investigators who need limited funding to research innovative, exploratory ideas, particularly in areas where traditional research funding may be limited or unavailable.

This grant will support Doorn’s research on AI-supported generation of interpretative comments for anemia diagnostics.

Doorn’s research focuses on translating machine learning innovations into clinical practice, with a particular emphasis on emergency department risk stratification and biomarker development. He led a machine learning for risk stratification in the emergency department randomized controlled trial on AI-based mortality prediction. He combines hands-on clinical laboratory experience with advanced computation skills to develop evidence-based, implementable diagnostic solutions.

Diana Martinez is a student at Rutgers University, School of Health Professions, studying medical laboratory science (MLS).

Through the ADLM Scholars Program, Diana hopes to explore the various specializations within MLS and better understand the responsibilities, qualifications, and long-term trajectories associated with each path.

After graduation, she plans to obtain certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Her long-term goal is to pursue a career that extends beyond a traditional generalist role and allows her to contribute to innovation and leadership in laboratory medicine.

Hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma and critical illness, underscoring the need for immediate laboratory guidance for intervention.

The challenge for today’s laboratories is to not only generate accurate results but also deliver the right information quickly enough to guide care in real time. Yet many laboratories still operate within frameworks optimized for accuracy over speed, which leaves a critical gap in the care of actively bleeding patients.

To bridge this gap, labs must change the mindset around coagulation testing in these scenarios, shifting their focus from precision to speed with a result “accurate enough” to guide management and change outcomes.
