Chickenpox and measles can be prevented through vaccination.

These vaccines are both part of a child's normal vaccination schedule. Both vaccines are given in two doses. The first dose is given between 12 and 15 months of age, while the second dose is given between the ages of 4 and 6 years.

If you weren't vaccinated for either disease as a child, you should plan to get vaccinated. This not only protects you from infection, but also helps to prevent chickenpox and measles from circulating within your community.

As World Cup crowds gather across North America, public health experts are monitoring for increased spread of measles, COVID-19, flu, and RSV. Large events can affect disease transmission far beyond the stadium. Staying up to date on recommended vaccinations is one of the best ways to protect yourself, your family, and your community.

Know where to expect ticks. Spending time in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas could expose you to ticks. This could include walking your dog, gardening, playing outside, hiking, camping, hunting, or other outdoor activities. Many people get tick bites in their own backyards or neighborhoods.

Treat your clothes and outdoor gear with 0.5% permethrin. Permethrin should never be applied directly to the skin.

Wear EPA-registered insect repellents. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. Not all repellents are effective against both mosquitoes and ticks.

Reduce the amount of exposed skin. Wearing long sleeves, long pants, hats, socks, and shoes that cover the entire foot will reduce the chance that a tick will be able to attach. Tucking in your shirt and stuffing your pant legs inside the tops of your socks is also recommended. Wearing light-colored clothing may make ticks easier to see and remove.
