This is prunella vulgaris, a very health benefjcial plant, known for centuries , to promote wellness. It has anti-inflammatory properties, among many others, and you can prepare a tea with it. It is of the peppermint family, so it has a pleasant taste. You may see it in your yard right now, as it is the time to begin harvesting, after the little blue flowers come out. Just take your scissors, clip them at the bottom, and lay them out to air dry, indoors. It usually takes about two weeks to dry. Then brew it as a tea, and drink some every day. One of it's names is self heal, and it grows abundantly in this area. Enjoy it's taste and benefits. You may notice a relaxing effect too, as many herbal teas have this effect.

There is some confusion and uncertainty, as to what role fats play in health. Actually, it is a very important one, because they are utilized in many biological processes, supporting cardiovascular health, and as a source of stored energy. Take cholesterol, for instance. There is a built in fear of avoiding it, because of a misunderstanding of it's role, and negative information about it, but yet it is necessary in the formation of hormones. So what's all the hoop lah about it ? Well, when it undergoes abnormal metabolism, it combines with proteins and carbohydrates to form a sticky substance that likes to attach to the walls of arteries and veins. So, as blood flows through
these blood vessels, it undergoes some resistance, causing a little vibration or turbulence, especially if the plaque build up is significant. Reducing dietary intake of animal fat(high in cholesterol) can help reduce the risk of this plaque build up, but the root of the problem is in the metabolism. Cholesterol is actually produced by your own body, and as I said , used to make important hormones, so you shouldn't think of it as a harmful substance. High cholesterol levels by themselves are not necessarily bad. It is whether it is being abnormally metabolized to form sticky substances such as low density lipoproteins.(LDL) That's what you need to be concerned about if it gets too high. So that's a word about the negative side of fats. Now let's look at the positive side, which far outweighs the negative. Fats derived from plant sources are very beneficial and necessary for good health, as they can help clean up the mess in your arteries. These oils oxidize very easily and lose some of their benefit, when not consummed fresh, so try to get them as fresh as possible. The better lubricated your arteries are, the smoother your blood will flow, so be sure to consume enough fats, such as in olive oil, flax seed oil, nuts, fish, coconut, butter, etc.
A little olive oil on a vegetable salad, is a good place to start.
Have a grand week end, and remember to shake hands with your friendly fats.

To***co smoke:
Ni****ne is the principal addictive factor in to***co, but when smoked, the constituent sugars(mostly added) turn in to acetaldehyde, which when combined with the ni****ne, have an added addictive effect. Acetaldehyde is metabolized into a substance called harman, which can produce an antidepressant effect. Unfortunately, the acetaldehyde carries health risk factors, along with other constituents such as polyacrylic hydrocarbons, nitrosamines and many others. A diet high in polyphenols can greatly alleviate the health risks involved with smoking. Some of the more important ones are: pomegranates, grapes, pecans, and cloves. Cloves contain eugenol which is an excellent bio-protective agent. The elderberry syrup that is carried at the pharmacy, is an excellent supplement to help protect against the ill health effects of smoking, as it contains cloves. Cloves also has excellent anti-bacterial activity. Since cloves also has anticoagulant properties, there is a word of caution in not consumming too much. Following the recommended dose usually produces no problem. So even if you are not a smoker, this elderberry syrup carries it's weight in health benifits.
Have a great weekend,
John

One thing you may not think or hear about, is your body as a generator of electricity. From the food you eat, and the air that you breath, electricity is generated to keep you funtioning. For instance, the immune system is the bodies central dispatch system, first receiving messages from the central nervous system, then deciphering what to do with them, dispatching frequencies throughout your body, enabling communications. This is very important, because if a particular message is not coming across because of a distorted frequency or no signal at all, then that particular function that it was trying to carry out, is undone. One organ that depends on and uses a lot of electricity, is your heart. It receives messages from the autonomic nervous system, and it fires up. Let us not underestimate the importance and dependability, on electricity, or take it for granite, in the role it plays.
Electricity is all around, but even when you don't notice it, it is working for you.
Have a great, exciting week.

Poison ivy, poison oak, etc., is something to keep in mind, as we are approaching it's proliferation stage, drawing near spring, when many like to clean up the yard, fence lines, etc. No matter how careful you are, if you are allergic to it , it probably will pop up, but don't fret. The first time you notice the rash, or if you think you been around it, soap up the area real well, rinsing well, and towel dry, to reduce it's effects. There is something you can rub on the rash, tbat you probably haven't heard of , and that's cbg and cbd cream, which I carry at the pharmacy. Zanfel cream is also good, but it's kind of expensive. I also have topicure ointment, which I mix up myself, and it works for other types of rashs as well. Starting with the cbg cbd cream is my suggestion. The cost is about $12 for a small jar. Thanks, and hope you consider shopping at Our Lady of Guadalupe Pharmacy. Have a wonderful rest lf the week.

Today's role of a pharmacist:
Pharmacy is really thousands of years old, but it's role has taken a different turn recently. Initially, it was kind of by accident and experimentation, that various herbs were noticed to have beneficial health benefits. So, there they went, those that were interested, gathering them up and preparing them for use. Those were the first pharmacists, but probably not actually called that then. Moving closer to our time, around 100 years ago, there were few medicines available, and the pharmacist, working in his store , would obtain them from someone else who gathered and prepared the products, themselves assuming the original role of a pharmacist. Later, research developing rapidly, many new drugs would begin to be available. Physicians were also in the picture, begining to prescribe them for various heath conditions. The pharmacist could dispense most medicines back then, without a doctor' order, but laws came in to play, and that changed matters. Nowadays, it is even harder to keep up with the knowledge on all the many, and increasing drugs on the market. But that is now the main pharmacist's role, is to know about them, what they are used for, and how they affect health. There is much less fixing or compounding medicines now, since most of them are ready to dispense, and only require bottling and labeling, and instructing the patient when necessary. With that being said, the role of a pharmacist today, goes beyond dispensing drugs. Understanding how these drugs work, using this to improve patient health, is the essence of the work of a oharmacist.

This is a correction on the previous post about vitamins. Dl alpha tocopherol is a synthetic form of vitamin e, and is non preferred. Amongst the natural forms of vitamin e is d alpha tocopherol,(not dl) and is preferred. You may see mixed tocopherols, which is ok. This is one of the things to look for when selecting a multivitamin.

Vitamins, and a lot more.
Some medical professionals don't really advocate or think much about daily supplementation with vitamins and other supplements, but the truth is, there have been multiple studies that show they do help with overall health, because they give your body what is uses in it's many facits and processes. Supplements per sae, such as turmeric, methyl sulfonyl methane( a source of organic sulfur, sulfur being very important), ant-oxidants such as resveratrol, gives your body something that it can work with, to help improve your health. Yes, you can over do , or take the wrong supplements,(because there are so many out there) but being well informed and gradually working your way up, usually proves beneficial. Usually a good multivitamin mineral supplement, is a good place to start. Always look at the ingredients before you purchase them, because if your body cannot readily absorb and use them, they can do more harm than good. Generally, if it's minerals are chelated with an organic compound such as in zinc glycinate, and the vitamin e is in natural form, such as dl tocopherol and mixed tocopherols, it is a good choice. Be cautious not to confuse l tocpherol with dl tocopherol, as the l form is synthetic and not recommended. As the foods we eat don't have the same nutritional value(especially those bought rather than from a local garden) as they did 100 years ago, it makes sense to supplement, but proceed cautiously. Usually a food that will taste better, is better for you. With that, your mindset in place, proceed to better health, so that you may have more energy, think clearer and faster. But be persistent, for nothing good comes by too easy.

Understanding blood pressure and it's importance.
Your blood pressure is usually a pretty good sign of how the rest of your body is doing. When you feel your pulse, that's called systolic pressure, when the bottom part of your heart, containing blood volume is contracting. In between beats, when the bottom part of your heart is relaxing, this is the lower pressure in your arteries, called diastolic pressure, the lower number, at which time the top part of your heart that contains it's blood volume is contracting to push blood into the lower part of your heart, and so the cycle continues. The regulation of blood pressure by the automatic system of your body is accomplished by slowing down or speeding up the heart rate, or contracting or relaxing the arteries, a very complex system, in order to maintain overall homeostasis. Being that it does so, shows that blood pressure is important for overall health. So we shouldn't take blood pressure to be a minor part of health. Too low, and it can reduce your consumption of oxygen, and too high, it can increase workload of your heart to an undesirable level, which can lead to many complications, such as congrstive heart failure and arteriosclerosis. Get some exercise, your body usually likes this, and your blood pressure should be better regulated. Daily supplementation with magnesium usually helps.
Try to stay healthy,
