🔥Terpene Tuesday: Caryophyllene!🔥

This terpene is one of the most common found in US cultivars. There are lots of reasons why caryophyllene is special!

For one, its one of the few terpenes that directly interacts with our CB2 receptors. This gives the terpene anti-inflammatory effects regardless of intoxication. Caryophyllene has a unique chemical structure. Its circler shape is a rarity in nature. This terpene molecule is also larger then most.

Despite being different chemicals, a-caryophyllene and a-humulene are often used interchangeably. Humulene doesn't interact with CB2 receptors.

Because caryophyllene is common in flower, they use this terpene to train drug-sniffing dogs!

Terpene Tuesday!🔥Myrcene Fun Facts🔥

Myrcene is a common terpene found in relaxing cultivars. Like many terpenes, myrcene is used for its fragrance, its taste, and in commercial manufacturing.

This terpene is abundant in hops, and adds to the sharp earthy smell of beers like IPA's. β-Myrcene is used as a flavor agent, and may be a good option for manufacturing non-alcoholic beers.

Have you ever heard someone suggest eating a mango before your session? Rumor has it that the myrcene in mangos can help the effects set in. While no one has proven this as a fact, it is plausible. When thinking of the entourage theory, it makes sense that mixing the extra myrcene from a mango would shape the effects.

When aging hashish, a rare terpene is formed from the conversion of myrcene. Myrcene oxidizes from the light (photo-oxidation) and converts into hashishene, a terpene only found in aged hashish. Myrcene is also an intermediate chemical for other substances like alcohols.

Topical products can provide relief without intoxicating effects. Have you ever wondered why they work? Lets chat about it!

Topicals with cannabinoids are great for pains, aches, and even angry skin. These are great products to add on to other relief regimens like heat/massage therapy.

Topicals work by activating receptors in the outermost layers of tissue where product is applied. When these receptors activate, it triggers an anti-inflammatory response. The cannabinoid molecules bind to receptors and dampen signaling pathways that contribute to localized pain.

These products aren't likely to cause intoxication effects because the cannabinoids don't make it into the bloodstream. Transdermal patches are made to permeate the skin barrier more effectively, and may cause intoxication.

Terp Tuesday: Ocimene fun facts!🔥

Ocimene is one of the most abundant terpenes found in nature. We know it as the terpene that gives flower a woody and sweet scent. We also associate high ocimene strains with energizing, uplifting effects. But there is more to be appreciated about this terpene!

Similar to pheromones, plants can produce terpenes "talk" to other plants. some plants. For example, tomato and pepper plants will produce ocimene to warn others that they are in danger. The surrounding plants may ready their cell walls for harm, or even produce compounds to make themselves less tasty! This terpene communication can deter pests, while also attracting pollinators.

Ocimene is one of the many terpenes utilized for it's fragrance. This terpene can be found in cosmetics, candles, perfumes, and self care products like deodorant. The scent is often used in aromatherapy, and is thought to promote mental clarity and alertness.

Chemistry is so vast, and continues to amaze us everyday. The molecular formula C10H16 is shared by many terpenes like limonene, pinene, and myrcene. So how do all these terpenes have such distinct scents and effects? The molecules are the same, but they are arranged differently. Its the structure of the molecules that effects the chemicals properties and aroma.

The more you know about science, the more it feels like your uncovering the secrets of the universe. Until next time!

Terpene Tuesday🌿Pinene fun facts!

The world of terpenes is much more vast than you would ever think! Not only does this terpene make our flower taste and smell fresh, but there are so many real world uses for it as well!

Did you know that depending on what plants pasture raised cows eat, the terpenes from those plants make there way into cows milk? This may effect the taste, aroma and possibly even nutritional benefits. Check out this study (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022030206723025)

Everyday scientists uncover more discoveries about the plant world. From finding more sustainable options by using terpenes, to experimenting with possible health benefits, the possibilities could be endless.
