📚💜International Literacy Day is a reminder that reading, writing, and access to information can open doors to safety, opportunity, and independence. 📚💜 Literacy helps individuals navigate important resources, understand their options, communicate their needs, and build confidence in everyday life.

At Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, we believe that knowledge is empowering. By connecting survivors with information, advocacy, and supportive resources, we help create pathways toward safety, healing, and long-term stability. Today, celebrate the power of learning—and help build a community where everyone has access to the tools they need to thrive.

Technology can be a powerful tool—but it can also be misused to invade privacy, control, monitor, or intimidate.

As smart-home devices, apps, cameras, and location-sharing tools become more common, it is important to remember that everyone deserves privacy, safety, and the freedom to live without being watched.

Technology-related monitoring can be a form of abuse. Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury offers free, confidential, trauma-informed support, counseling, advocacy, and safety planning for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Seeking support takes courage. Help is available.

The fallout from the Good Good Golf and Callaway ad is still unfolding.

The ad showed a male golfer shoving a woman to the ground as she reached for his golf club. It was intended as entertainment. But violence against women is not entertainment—and it should never be used as a punchline to sell a product.

Since the backlash, Callaway ended its relationship with Good Good, retailers removed co-branded merchandise, and Good Good CEO Matt Kendrick and President Joe Flannery have left the company.

Accountability matters. And so does recognizing that this was not one person’s decision. Callaway has acknowledged that it approved the ad before it was released.

Multiple people had the opportunity to stop it. They did not.

For survivors of domestic violence, images like these are painful reminders of experiences that are all too real.

At Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, we advocate on behalf of survivors and victims and regularly work with state legislators to strengthen accountability and protections for people seeking help.

We strongly condemn this ad. We also encourage individuals, businesses, and community leaders to stand with survivors and help create meaningful change. Violence is never a joke. Survivors deserve better.

If you or someone you know needs support, Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury is here to help.

With summer behind us and routines back in full swing, fall brings a natural time to reflect on progress made and refocus on the progress ahead.

However, progress doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes it’s fast and visible. Other times, it’s quiet and barely noticeable.

What matters most is that we keep moving, even when the pace feels slower than we would like. We don’t have to have it all figured out. We just have to keep going.

What is one area of your life where you are making steady progress right now? Share it in the comments. We would love to cheer you on.

Strength can look different for everyone.

Sometimes, strength is speaking up. Sometimes, it is asking for help. Sometimes, it is setting a boundary, taking a deep breath, or simply making it through a difficult day. For survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, strength is not defined by what happened to them—it is found in their resilience, their choices, and their ability to move forward on their own terms.

At Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, we are honored to walk alongside survivors as they find safety, rebuild confidence, and create hopeful futures. You are stronger than you know, and you do not have to face challenges alone.đź’ś

September is home to some truly remarkable moments in history. From breakthroughs in medicine to the furthest reaches of space, these are the kinds of milestones that remind us of what becomes possible when human ingenuity, courage, and determination come together.

Here are three we are celebrating this month:

🫀 September 2, 1952 - At the University of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota surgical team (Drs. F. John Lewis, C. Walton Lillehei, Mansur Taufic, and Richard Varco) performed the first successful open-heart surgery using a technique called hypothermia, often called “code chill” or “code cool,” to temporarily stop the heart's blood flow.

🚀 September 5, 1977 - NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft, which has since become the most distant human-made object ever to travel through space. Onboard is the Golden Record, a carefully assembled message from Earth intended for any extraterrestrial life that may find it.

🏗️ September 30, 1935 - In the middle of the Great Depression, construction on the Hoover Dam commenced, a monumental feat of engineering that was finished two years ahead of schedule.
These moments continue to inspire us to think bigger, reach further, and never underestimate what is possible.

Which of these September milestones resonates with you the most? Drop a comment and let us know!
