National Mental Health Corps Mission: Leading the charge to solve the mental health workforce crisis. Vision: A nation where mental wellbeing is possible for all.

Health360 hosts several AmeriCorps National Service Programs that take a community-based approach to our nation’s physical and mental health crisis. AmeriCorps members are deployed in communities across the nation implementing evidenced-based programs that tackle health disparities in underserved communities. Health360 is also home to Healthy Minds Alliance (HMA), which is an innovative AmeriCorps program that increases the capacity of our partners to address mental health needs in their local community. Established in 2013, Healthy Minds Alliance has partnered with a variety of organizations from across the nation including universities, school districts, community health centers, health care systems, mental health centers, crisis call centers, and AHECs who host one or more Healthy Minds Alliance AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members serve full-time, 40 hours per week for 10 months, building capacity at their host site to address local mental health needs. Health360 is home to Northwestern Connecticut Area Health Education Center (AHEC), one of the four regional centers that comprise the Connecticut AHEC Network. AHEC focuses on developing a pipeline of future health care professionals who are prepared to practice in Connecticut’s rural and urban underserved communities.

Tomorrow, October 10, is World Mental Health Day!

This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is recognizing World Mental Health Day with the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.”

The campaign emphasizes the importance of ensuring that individuals with lived experience of mental health conditions are not only heard, but meaningfully involved in shaping the policies, programs, and services that affect their lives.

WHO reminds us that lived experience is a valuable form of expertise. By elevating these perspectives, we can strengthen peer-led approaches, reduce stigma, and advance more responsive, person-centered mental health care.

At National Mental Health Corps, we recognize the importance of community voices in building stronger systems of prevention, early intervention, and mental health support.

There’s something especially valuable about seeing prevention work come to life on a college campus.

National Mental Health Corps recently had the opportunity to attend Fresh Check Day at Quinnipiac University and experience the model firsthand. With Connecticut Children's working to advance youth su***de prevention efforts across the state, it was a valuable opportunity to see this approach in action and learn from the impressive level of student participation.

What stood out most was the level of student engagement. Students weren’t simply attending, they were actively participating in conversations and activities designed to make mental health and su***de prevention approachable, visible, and part of everyday campus life.

One memorable example was the “Elephant in the Room” table, where students could write about the things we often carry but don’t talk about with others. Alongside creative activities, campus partners, and even some four-legged support, the event demonstrated how thoughtful prevention programming can create meaningful opportunities for connection and conversation.

Thank you to Quinnipiac for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to learn from the experience. Seeing Fresh Check Day in action offered valuable insight into how student-centered prevention approaches can help create healthier, more connected campus communities.

At National Mental Health Corps, we believe service can be a powerful pathway into the behavioral health workforce.

We’re excited to see the National Governors Association launch Service United, an initiative focused on expanding paid service opportunities that address community needs while helping people build skills, gain experience, and launch meaningful careers.

We’re especially encouraged to see youth mental health and behavioral health workforce development highlighted as examples of what service-to-career pathways can accomplish.

This is the future of service we’re working toward: serve communities, build careers, strengthen the behavioral health workforce.
