✨ Reinforcement: The Backbone of ABA ✨

When you hear “reinforcement,” you might think of rewards—but in ABA, reinforcement is much more specific.

📚 The proper definition:
Reinforcement is adding or removing something from the environment to maintain or increase the future frequency of a targeted behavior.

In other words, when something happens after a behavior and that consequence makes the behavior more likely to happen again, reinforcement has occurred. 💙

And here’s something important: reinforcement isn’t just for individuals with autism!

Reinforcement is embedded in everyday life. We all experience it! 🙌

☕ You make your morning coffee → you enjoy the taste → you’re more likely to make coffee tomorrow.
📱 You send a message → you receive a response → you’re more likely to message again.
💼 You complete a task → you receive positive feedback → you’re more likely to repeat that behavior.
🏃 You exercise → you feel accomplished → you’re more likely to exercise again.

ABA simply applies the science of behavior to intentionally identify what consequences are meaningful to an individual and use them to support meaningful skill development.

At SOAR Autism Center, reinforcement is an important part of creating positive, individualized learning experiences. Our goal is to help learners build skills that are functional, meaningful, and valuable in their everyday lives. 🌟

✨ Evidence-Based Methods Used in ABA ✨

ABA is an individualized, evidence-based approach that uses a variety of teaching strategies to help learners build meaningful skills and increase independence. 💙

Some commonly used ABA methods include:

🔹 Reinforcement – Strengthening behaviors by providing something meaningful following the behavior.
🔹 Extinction – Systematically withholding reinforcement for a behavior that was previously reinforced, as part of an individualized behavior plan.
🔹 Shaping – Reinforcing small steps, or successive approximations, toward a target skill.
🔹 Prompting & Prompt Fading – Providing support to help a learner succeed, then gradually reducing that support to encourage independence.
🔹 Generalization – Helping learners use skills across different people, places, materials, and situations.
🔹 Punishment – A behavior-change procedure that decreases the future likelihood of a behavior. When used, it should be carefully considered, ethically implemented, and part of an individualized treatment plan.

At SOAR Autism Center, we believe these strategies should be thoughtfully individualized to each learner’s strengths, needs, communication style, and goals. Our focus is on teaching meaningful skills that support communication, independence, participation, and quality of life. 🌟

Check out these sensory-friendly events at the Longway planetarium in Flint! They are hosting monthly sensory-friendly showings, starting with "In my Backyard", which explores things large and small, from the colors of the rainbow, to the reasons for the seasons.

About the accommodations: During sensory-friendly shows, we turn the lights up and turn the sound down to provide a safe, welcoming environment for our friends with special needs. Sensory-friendly shows will now feature open captioning for the hearing-impaired community. Be yourself and find the best spot in the house to enjoy the show!

At SOAR, our favorite sensory tools are much more than fun—they're purposeful! 🌈🫧

Items like bubbles, glitter tubes, weighted blankets, trampolines, crash pads, kinetic sand, and fidgets help children regulate their bodies and minds so they can be ready to learn.

When a child is overwhelmed, anxious, or seeking sensory input, it can be difficult to focus, communicate, or participate. By meeting their sensory needs first, we help create a calm, organized state where learning can happen.

Every learner is more than a diagnosis, behavior, or data point. That's why collaboration is such an important part of quality ABA services.

🏠 Families provide invaluable insight into routines, preferences, strengths, priorities, and what works at home.

🏫 Teachers help us understand how a learner participates in the classroom, interacts with peers, and responds to academic and environmental demands.

🗣️ SLPs bring expertise in communication and language, helping the team support functional and meaningful communication.

👐 OTs provide valuable perspectives related to functional skills, independence, motor development, and participation in daily activities.

This commitment to collaboration is one of the ways SOAR stands apart. We don't view other professionals as separate from the process; we view them as valuable members of the team.

Why? Because our goal isn't simply for a skill to be demonstrated during therapy. We want skills to be meaningful, functional, and carried over into the environments where our clients live, learn, play, and connect.
