Empty Bowls is a project sponsored by the IPFW Department of Fine Arts to help raise money for the Community Harvest Food Bank and the IPFW Ceramics Guild. Individuals donate $15 and receive a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted bowl along with a complimentary soup lunch including a drink and dessert. Soup for the event is being donated by Cosmos Restaurants. Two of their favorite soups will be offered: lemon rice and chicken noodle. The event will be held on Tuesday, May 2 at First Presbyterian Church, 300 West Wayne St., Fort Wayne from 11 – 2 p.m.
IPFW has partnered with DeKalb High School and Huntington North High School to hand-craft 300 bowls by both students and faculty for the event. Bowls were also made as part of a service learning assignment in the IPFW Advanced Ceramics class. Two ceramic students, Kelly Grant and Allison Kruger, received a service learning grant from Purdue University Student ServiRestaurantsgGrant Program to pay for the materials for the bowls, food for the event, and advertising.
“Service learning is a big part of what education should include,” explained Seth Green, assistant professor of ceramics at IPFW. “Twice a year people on campus get the opportunity to purchase student ceramic work, so we are thrilled to bring this opportunity to the thousands of people who work downtown in an effort to support the hungry in our community. Plus they get the opportunity to have delicious soup from Cosmos without having to drive for lunch.”
