The urge to breathe is not your body running out of oxygen. It is carbon dioxide.
And carbon dioxide is not waste. It is the signal that tells your blood where to release the oxygen it carries. Working muscle makes more of it, and that is how the oxygen knows to get off there.
So your tolerance for it is worth training. It rises with practice, and so does your composure while it climbs. Athletes who train this way often report less breathlessness at the same effort. How big the effect is, researchers are still measuring, and we would rather say so.
There is a simple way to measure yours. The method is below.
β οΈ On land only. Never in or near water, and never after breathing hard and fast on purpose. If you have a heart or lung condition, or you are pregnant, check with your doctor first.
What did you get? Comment your number below. The low ones are the interesting ones.
