National Occupational Therapy Month 💙🐴

This month, we’re celebrating the impact of occupational therapy at LifeStriders—and the incredible professionals who make it possible.

We’re grateful to have both an Occupational Therapist (OT) and an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) as part of our team, working together to support our riders in building strength, coordination, independence, and confidence.

In the barn, therapy looks a little different. It might be reaching for the reins, improving posture in the saddle, or connecting with a horse in a way that builds trust and emotional growth.

Every session is thoughtful, purposeful, and centered around each rider’s unique goals—and we’re so thankful for the care and dedication our OT team brings to this work every day. 💙

🐴❤️ Meet the Team Monday ❤️🐴

This week, we’re excited to introduce Martha, our new Occupational Therapist!

❓ What is your role at LifeStriders?
I am an Occupational Therapist and Social Skills Facilitator.

❓ What is your background?
I earned my Master’s degree from Mount Mary University and have experience working in pediatric clinics as well as home health care with older adults.

❓ What brought you to LifeStriders?
I was drawn to LifeStriders because of its nature-based approach to care and unique setting. Working with horses supports not only physical strength, balance, and coordination, but also emotional regulation, confidence, and self-esteem. The connection participants build with the horses encourages trust, patience, and a sense of accomplishment in a hands-on way, while the outdoor environment makes the experience feel engaging and calming.

❓ Favorite barn sound?
The sound of horse hooves on the concrete barn floor.

Recently, we celebrated a very special member of the LifeStriders family. 🐴❤️

Meet Almar, an Icelandic gelding born in 1992 who joined LifeStriders in June of 2013. It didn’t take long for him to win over the hearts of riders, volunteers, and staff. Known for his intelligence, kindness, and incredible patience, Almar is a steady and trusted partner in the arena.

Almar has made a meaningful impact on so many who come through our barn, and we are so grateful for the calm, connection, and confidence he helps create every day.

He was recently recognized for his impact—and of course, celebrated with a special treat!

Today, we had the opportunity to celebrate something truly special—our incredible volunteers.

At LifeStriders, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Whether they’re leading horses, side-walking, helping behind the scenes, or simply showing up with a smile, they make each lesson possible and each connection meaningful.

Because of you, our riders gain confidence, build strength, and experience the joy of working with our amazing horses. Your time, compassion, and dedication do not go unnoticed—and today was just a small way to say thank you.

One of our favorite parts of each lesson happens at the very end.

Our riders put together a treat bowl for their horse as a simple way to say thank you. It’s a chance to slow down, share a quiet moment, and end on a positive note.

It’s also a fun way to build responsibility, confidence, and connection along the way. 💙🐴
