I help support a group of families and caregivers who care for those with dementia.

The question today was “Mom is not wanting to eat or drink. She gets mad when we push foods on her. Her blood work was low. What foods would she like to increase her sodium?”

My offerings…

It’s so challenging navigating this road. My dad too has this illness and lives with me and my family. I am a geriatric RN and a hospice nurse.
Our bodies tell us what we need. When we are thirsty we drink and same for hunger. What gets challenging is we (family, caregivers and even some medical professionals) are so trained to feed and drink. It’s a big part of our culture.
If we feed our loved ones-push them to eat and drink that risk for choking increases, aspiration pneumonia etc. And as you shared, she gets mad at those pushing.
We always give dad food and drink. If he eats it- great. If he doesn’t-it’s ok.
My dad and I had many conversations about this exact situation. Sadly, we have a strong prevalence of dementia in our family. Our goal is to always meet dad where he is at.
