🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♀️ RUNNER’S REHAB SERIES

Part 1/5: Glute Tendinopathy

Pain on the outside or back of your hip that may travel down the outside of your leg and progressively worsens during a run — especially on uphill portions — could be a sign of gluteal tendinopathy.

Gluteal tendinopathy occurs when the gluteal tendons become irritated and unable to tolerate the amount of load being placed on them.

It can sometimes occur alongside other sources of lateral hip pain, including bursitis or IT band-related symptoms.

The good news? You don’t necessarily have to stop running. 👏

Successful rehab often involves:

✅ Modifying your running volume and intensity to a tolerable level
✅ Gradually loading and strengthening the gluteal muscles
✅ Addressing factors contributing to the irritation
✅ Progressively building your running mileage back up

And here’s the important part:

Rehab isn’t just about getting out of pain.

The goal is to get you out of pain, keep you there, and help you perform better than before.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our Runner’s Rehab Series next week, where we’ll talk about eccentrics and downhill running. ⛰️

Ready to get out of pain and start performing better than ever?

I want to share a patient success story with you.
A few months ago, a young mom came to see me with persistent pain in the front of her hip. She's active, enjoys running, and loves working out—but this pain was starting to take those things away from her.

She couldn't run without pain. Exercise became frustrating. Going up and down stairs hurt. It was even keeping her awake at night.

The pain had been lingering for over three months and wasn't getting any better.

At our first visit, I made her a promise:
If she committed to the process and put in the work outside of our sessions, I'd do everything I could to help her feel like herself again by summertime.

This past weekend, I ran into her at church.
She told me her hip feels great.
She's back to running. Back to exercising. She even recently went on vacation and walked over 20,000 steps in a single day—all without hip pain.

Now, this transformation didn't happen overnight.
It took 3-4 months of consistent effort.

It didn't take surgery.
It didn't take injections.
It didn't take pain medication.

It took a thorough assessment, a personalized treatment plan, targeted exercises, accountability, and a little hands-on treatment along the way.

Together, we identified the root cause of her pain and worked toward the goals we set from day one.

Today, she's back to doing the things she loves without constantly thinking about her hip.
Too often, people believe they have to wait until their pain becomes unbearable before seeking help.

The truth is, you don't have to live with pain, and you don't have to wait for it to get worse.
If you're an active adult looking to get out of pain, move better, and perform at your best, let's talk.

You could be the next success story.

You wouldn't take your car to a bike shop.
Yet every day, active people trust their recovery to healthcare providers who don't specialize in the activities they're trying to get back to.

Not all physical therapy is the same.

Many clinics are designed to help people decrease pain and get through everyday life. That's important. But runners, lifters, and active adults often need something different.
They need someone who understands performance.

Whether you're training for a race, chasing a strength goal, or simply trying to stay active without pain, your rehabilitation should be built around getting you back to performing at your best—not just getting you out of pain.

As a physical therapist who works with runners, lifters, and active adults, I've learned that pain is rarely the whole story. Underneath the symptoms, there are often strength deficits, mobility restrictions, movement pattern issues, or running and lifting mechanics that are driving the problem.

Treating symptoms without addressing those factors is one reason injuries often return.
Getting out of pain is only part of the process.
The real goal is identifying the root cause, fixing it, and helping you return stronger, more confident, and better prepared for the demands of your sport or lifestyle.

Have you ever felt like rehab helped your pain, but never truly solved the problem?

If you're tired of chasing the same injury, let's talk.
