đź’™ Men's Mental Health Awareness Month đź’™

This month, we shine a light on an important conversation that too often stays in the dark—men's mental health.

Did you know that about 1 in 5 adult men experience a mental health condition each year? Yet many men feel pressure to stay silent, hide their emotions, or " tough it out" alone. Mental health challenges don't always look like sadness. They can show up as irritability, anger, risk-taking behaviors, substance use, social withdrawal, or avoiding emotions altogether.

âś… Check in on the men in your life.
âś… Listen without judgment.
âś… Encourage healthy coping skills and self-care.
âś… Remind them that asking for help takes courage.

Strong men ask for help. Strong men talk about their mental health. Strong men take care of themselves and others.

Last week members of our office had the privilege of attending the Annual Prevention Providers Meeting in San Antonio. This is always a wonderful time of gaining knowledge, refresh of our spirits and collaborating with other Youth Prevention Programs from all over the sate of Texas. Alongside our sister campuses Serenity House Impact Youth Prevention Program - Abilene and Serenity Impact- Wichita Falls/Prevention Alliance for Wichita, we were so blessed and proud to recieve the Prevention Organization of the Year award! We love our communities and each of our staffs work hard to create meaningful realtionships through education for youth and adults to make healthy choices for life.

We are also so proud of Michelle McCoy, Director of the Wichita Falls campus for winning Innovator of the Year Award! She pours so much out, she deserves this recognition!

Giving children a “sip” of alcohol isn’t harmless.

Still, some parents think it’s safer to let kids try alcohol at home where they can watch them. Others believe that letting kids sip alcohol makes it less mysterious and forbidden, so kids will be less likely to seek out alcohol on their own or with friends.

The fact is that children’s bodies are still developing, and alcohol can affect healthy growth. Plus it lowers the perception of harm. Alcohol can cause permanent damage to organs like the liver, heart, and stomach as well as the central nervous system. That’s why the Know When. Know How.℠ campaign aims to prevent underage drinking.

The younger children start drinking, the more likely they are to have problems with alcohol as adults. Children who begin drinking at age 13 have a 45 percent chance of becoming alcohol dependent later in life. That’s a four times greater chance than children who do not.

Excessive alcohol use includes:
Binge drinking—Four or more drinks for women, or five or more drinks for men during an occasion.
Heavy drinking—Eight or more drinks for women, or 15 or more drinks for men during a week.
Underage drinking—any alcohol use by people younger than 21.
Drinking while pregnant—any alcohol use during pregnancy.
Moderate alcohol use
Moderate drinking is:
For men—two drinks or less in a day.
For women—one drink or less in a day.
Keep in mind that a beverage that you drink might have more than one standard drink of alcohol in it.

A disposable v**e and a disposable dab pen can look almost identical, but they’re usually made for different substances and experiences.
What a disposable v**e is

A disposable v**e is a sealed, ready-to-use device with:

a battery
heating coil
prefilled liquid/oil

Once it’s empty, you throw the whole thing away. Many are ni****ne v**es, but cannabis companies also sell THC disposables using the same style.

What a disposable dab pen is

A disposable dab pen is basically a disposable v**e specifically designed for cannabis concentrates (“dabs”). These concentrates are thicker and usually much more potent than standard THC oil.

Common concentrates include:

wax
shatter
budder
live resin
rosin

Dab pens tend to hit harder and faster because concentrates can contain very high THC levels.
A lot of modern THC disposables are basically “disposable dab pens” marketed under different names.

Phone usage and screen time in general can greatly hinder sleep. Small changes can aid in making a big difference.
"- Turn off devices early. Power down electronics at least 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
- Move your phone. Keep it in another room if possible. If you use it as an alarm, try a clock instead.
- Create a routine. Reading, journaling or a warm shower can help your body wind down.
- Stick to a schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day supports healthy sleep.
- Silence alerts. If you must keep your phone nearby, turn off notifications so they don’t disturb you."

"1. Consuming caffeine prior to sleep reduces total sleep time and sleep efficiency, and increases sleep onset latency and wake after sleep onset.
2. Caffeine consumption alters subsequent sleep architecture with an increase in the occurrence of light sleep and a reduction in the occurrence of deep sleep.
3. Reductions in total sleep time are dependent on the final dose of caffeine and the time of day that it is consumed relative to bedtime, with greater reductions occurring when larger doses are consumed closer to bedtime.
4. To avoid reductions in total sleep time, coffee (107 mg per 250 mL) should be consumed at least 8.8 hours prior to bedtime, and a standard serve of pre-workout supplement (217.5 mg) should be consumed at least 13.2 hours prior to bedtime."
