A fasting glucose result within the standard range can be reassuring—but it doesn’t always tell the entire story of your metabolic health.

One of the more important questions we can ask isn't simply:
“Is your blood sugar high?”

It's:
“What is your body having to do to keep it there?”

Insulin helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells where it can be used or stored. As the body becomes less responsive to insulin, it may compensate by producing more insulin to maintain glucose within a normal range. This means metabolic changes can be developing even before fasting glucose or A1C reaches the threshold for prediabetes or diabetes.

That is why looking deeper may sometimes include markers such as fasting insulin, fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1C, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and other indicators of metabolic health, interpreted within the context of the individual.

And the clues aren't always found only in bloodwork. Changes in energy, hunger and cravings, body composition, waist circumference, blood pressure, or difficulty managing weight may also warrant a broader conversation about metabolic health.

The goal isn't to become afraid of a laboratory number. It's to recognize patterns early enough to understand what they may be telling us.

Because “within range” and “metabolically optimal” aren't always the same conversation.

If your glucose looks normal but you still feel like something has changed, don't let one number end the conversation.

Sometimes the most important question is what your body is doing behind the scenes to keep that number looking normal.

When we think about healthy aging, we often focus on what we might lose over time.

But there is something incredibly important that we can actively work to build and preserve: muscle.

Muscle is about far more than appearance or physical strength. It is metabolically active tissue that plays an important role in glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, mobility, balance, bone health, physical resilience, and maintaining independence as we age.

Beginning in adulthood, muscle mass and strength can gradually decline – particularly when we stop challenging our bodies to maintain them. Over time, that loss can affect much more than what we can lift. It can influence how easily we climb stairs, recover from illness or injury, maintain our balance, manage blood sugar, and continue performing everyday activities independently.

The encouraging part? Your chronological age moves in only one direction. Your muscle health is something you can still influence.

Strength training, adequate protein and nutrition, restorative sleep, metabolic health, and consistent movement can all be part of a strategy to preserve strength and function throughout life.

You don't need to become a bodybuilder. You don't need to train like an athlete.

You simply need to keep giving your body a reason to stay strong.

This Healthy Aging Month, consider a different longevity question:
When was the last time your health plan included preserving – and building – muscle?

September is Healthy Aging Month, but healthy aging is about much more than simply adding more candles to the birthday cake.

Living longer matters. But how we live during those additional years matters just as much.

We want the muscle and strength to carry the groceries, get up from the floor, climb the stairs, and continue doing the things we enjoy.

We want the balance and mobility that help us remain active and independent.
We want the mental clarity and cognitive health to stay engaged with the people, work, hobbies, and experiences that give our lives meaning.
We want the metabolic health, cardiovascular resilience, bone health, restorative sleep, and energy that allow us to participate fully in our own lives – not simply watch the years pass.

That is the difference between thinking only about lifespan and also thinking about healthspan: the portion of our lives spent in good health and with meaningful function and independence.

Healthy aging doesn't begin at 65, 70, or 80. The habits and health decisions we make earlier in life can help shape how we function in the decades ahead.

At Alpha Care Wellness Center, our approach to functional, integrative, and longevity medicine looks beyond simply asking:
“How can we live longer?”

We also want to ask:
“How can we remain strong, capable, engaged, and well while we do?”

Because adding years to life is valuable.
Adding health, strength, and vitality to those years is the goal.

September is National Cholesterol Education Month, making it a good time to look beyond whether the numbers on your last lipid panel were simply marked “normal.”

Pull up your most recent lipid panel.
Find your triglycerides.
Find your HDL cholesterol.
Then divide your triglycerides by your HDL.

The triglyceride-to-HDL ratio is one piece of information that can add context to the broader picture of your cardiometabolic health. Research has found associations between higher TG/HDL ratios and insulin resistance and metabolic risk, although the ratio is not a stand-alone diagnostic test and should be interpreted alongside your medical history, other laboratory markers, and individual risk factors.

That distinction matters because metabolic changes can begin developing long before a single glucose or cholesterol result crosses the threshold into an abnormal range.

This is why we encourage patients to look at laboratory results as patterns rather than isolated numbers. Depending on the individual, a more comprehensive evaluation may also consider fasting glucose, fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1C, triglycerides, HDL, blood pressure, body composition, and other relevant markers.

So this National Cholesterol Education Month, don't stop at:
“Was my cholesterol normal?”

Consider asking:
“What is the overall pattern telling me about my metabolic health?”

Have you ever calculated your triglyceride-to-HDL ratio?

Some stories deserve to be shared because they remind us why looking deeper matters.
For years, Pat lived with chronic pain and fatigue so significant that ordinary daily activities could feel overwhelming. She sought answers from multiple providers, yet continued to struggle without fully understanding what was contributing to the way she felt.

After just two months of working with Dr. Catherine Oseni, Pat says she is feeling better than she has in decades.

Her words speak to something we believe deeply at Alpha Care Wellness Center: meaningful care begins with listening. It means taking the time to understand the whole person, looking beyond individual symptoms, and asking deeper questions when the usual answers haven’t been enough.

We are incredibly grateful to Pat for trusting us with her care and for allowing us to share such a personal part of her journey. Most of all, we are grateful to hear the hope in her words:

“After so many years of struggling, I am incredibly grateful to have found Dr. Catherine and to finally feel like I am beginning to get my life back.”

Every person’s health journey is different, and progress looks different for everyone. But hearing that someone is beginning to feel like themselves again is one of the greatest privileges of the work we do.

Thank you, Pat, for sharing your experience and for allowing Alpha Care Wellness Center to be part of your journey.

Almost every patient starts their story the same way:
"I thought it was..."

Stress.
Getting older.
Hormones.
Anxiety.
A busy season.
Not getting enough sleep.

And sometimes... they're right.

But sometimes those explanations become the reason people spend years living with symptoms that were trying to point them toward something deeper.

At Alpha Care Wellness Center, we believe it's worth asking one more question:
"What if it's something else?"

Because when we stop assuming and start investigating, we often uncover the missing piece that changes everything.
Don't let assumptions become your diagnosis. Your body may be trying to tell a different story.
