The next time you find yourself arguing with someone,

try pausing for a moment and ask yourself:

“If I discovered that I was wrong, what in me would feel threatened?”

If the answer is:

“Nothing.”

then perhaps you are genuinely looking for the truth.

But if something inside says:

“I can’t let them think I’m stupid.”

“I can’t lose.”

“I have to shut them down.”

then you may have just caught a glimpse of the ego.

And the moment you see it, you are no longer completely controlled by it.

This message is not asking you to stop wanting to be right.

It is inviting you to notice:

“Do I want the truth to be seen, or do I want to be the one who is right?”

Because when you no longer need to protect the image of “I am the one who is right,”

you can say:

“I was wrong.”

without feeling smaller.

You can listen to another perspective

without feeling threatened.

And you can walk away from an argument

without needing someone to win.

When the truth matters more than the ego, being right or wrong no longer matters as much as it once did.

"Our souls are here to transform. Our hearts are here to awaken. Our minds are here to recognize the movements of the heart and the growth of the soul, and yet, when we are faced with opportunities to change, old fears will awaken, the inner walls of the heart will tighten as the fearful little self restricts us from opening more fully because of pains and traumas that happened early on.

In a sense, in order to really change, in order to transform, we have to let go of who we believe we are, and I mean in the sense that we believe our own story of how we were wounded and how we were traumatized. And that that woundedness, rather than breaking our heart open, makes our heart close up tightly early in life. We couldn't protect ourselves. We were vulnerable in the extreme, and therefore we all get wounded, and that wound lives in the heart.

They also say that after we're wounded, the ego forms to protect us from ever feeling that sense of deep wounding and the verge of annihilation ever again. But later in life, what originally protected us, such as the attitudes and the practices of the ego, become the thing that will shatter and limit our lives unless we learn to let go.

So, there's all this gold hidden within that's the core of so many stories found around the world. There's the fact that life will break us down and break us open. And then there's the psychological effect that we have inner resistance against change when what we really need to do is change and transform if we are to grow, if we are even to sustain ourselves and if we are to find meaning and purpose in a path with heart."
