Most people in the US can't imagine ingesting something bitter on purpose. Unless it's in a fancy cocktail, of course. 🍸

But bitter herbs are some of the most powerful tools we have for digestive health. And the research around it is pretty fascinating.

People who work with bitters often have fewer cravings for junk food, feel satisfied more quickly, and they tend to stop eating when they're actually full instead of 20 minutes after they've overeaten.

That's not just plant magic. It's science too. That's a plant doing what plants do when you understand how to use them. These plants are here to help bring the body back into balance.

In our latest podcast episode, clinical herbalist and author Maria Noel Groves and I go deep on all things gut health. Including bitters, mucilaginous herbs, and how to actually use plant medicine to support your digestive system in a profound way. Be sure to grab Maria's new book, if you don't have it already.

Drop GUT below and I'll send you the link to the full conversation, or find The Herbalist's Path on your favorite podcast player. 💚

We live in a culture that expects quick fixes. Take this pill today, feel better tomorrow.

This is why, so often, when people start getting into herbal medicine, they feel frustrated. They want to see quick results, or find the easy way out. Or, worse yet, "the natural version of [name a pharmaceutical]."

But the truth is, herbs just don't work that way. Sure, some things are pretty amazing in acute situations, but herbs work best when chosen or created for you, your unique body, and your specific needs. They're here to support our body's systems to function better. To nourish our body. Strengthen your resilience, and bring you back into balance.

When you start thinking of plant medicine on a deeper level, it becomes easy to see it as a relationship rather than just an instant fix remedy. This is when you stop chasing the one herb that will heal all the things, you start to listen to your body, and you build a practice that supports your health long term.

That's what we do inside Community Herbalist certification and mentorship. If you're ready to dive deeper with your herbal skills, knowledge, connection, and relationship, drop COMMUNITY below, and let's chat. 💚

There's a saying that flows throughout our house all the time. "When in doubt, plantain it out!"

But there's a lot more to this plant than the bug bites and bee stings most budding herbalists know it for.

Take the mucilage that makes it so soothing when used topically. That same cooling goodness is super helpful for cooling inflamed tissues on the inside too. Like your respiratory tract, gut wall, and the even the urinary tract.

Want a quick dive into Plantain and it's good medicine? Swipe on through the slides to learn more about its constituents, internal uses, harvesting, medicine making and some cautionary measures you might want to think about.

When you start learning plants in this depth, you become a smarter, more skilled herbalist, who has to spend a whole lot less money on alllll the plants!

An herbal first aid kit is only as effective as the person using it, and a nervous system in panic mode is not going to help anyone.

This is why nervous system support is one of the most important and most overlooked parts of building an effective herbal first aid kit. When we have frazzled nerves, and are panicking, it's hard to think clearly. This is why a calm, clear mind is one of the most important tools in any emergency situation.

Herbs can help calm that panic response, which is part of why they're essential in my kit.

Drop FIRST AID in the comments and I'll send you the full episode on herbal first aid essentials. 💚

Chamomile- most people don't think of it for a first aid kit, but it's an essential in mine, and it totally deserves a spot in yours.

Digestive upset from camp food? Chamomile.

Skin inflammation from a sting? Chamomile.

Eyes puffy and swollen from an allergic reaction? Wet those tea bags and lay them right on there.

Sometimes the most versatile herb in the kit isn't all exotic, flashy, or fancy. It's simple, friendly, and one you've known forever. But, maybe you just didn't know it quite deeply enough.

If you want to dive deeper into how and why Chamomile is essential for any first aid kit, tune into the latest episode of The Herbalist's Path, where I'm covering all things herbal first aid essentials.

Meet Horsetail, an ancient plant that’s been around since before the dinosaurs. 🌿

It’s usually considered a w**d, which is actually great news. It just means it’s abundant and easy to gather as medicine for all.

Horsetail is one of the highest plant sources of silica we have, a trace mineral that strengthens connective tissue, supports bone health, and yes, makes your hair shinier too.

One important note: gather from clean areas only. Their roots run deep, pulling minerals up from far below the Earth’s surface, which is exactly what makes them so potent. But that also means they’ll pull up pollutants and chemical runoff just as easily, and you really don’t want that in your medicine!

Let me know if you’re working with horsetail or curious about it. Drop it down below, can’t wait to hear about it! 💚

I spent my early adult years as a backpacking guide and wilderness therapist, taking people into some of the most epic, sacred places on earth.

And watching them fill their packs with toxic, nasty stuff that was bad for their bodies and bad for our planet.

That frustration planted a seed that grew into an obsession with getting real herbal first aid into the hands of people who actually spend time outdoors. I actually ended up getting those first aid goods into REI, who got them to more outdoor adventure seekers! (it was a super cool 18 year manifestation!)

Here's what I've learned after all those years on the trail and in the apothecary: a good herbal first aid kit doesn't just handle cuts and scrapes.

It handles the whole situation. The wound, the infection risk, the digestive chaos, and yes, the person spiraling next to whatever whoopsie daisy just happened.

These 5 herbs have never let me down. They're accessible, effective, and most of them you can find growing right outside your door.

If you want to go deeper on how to actually use them in the field, the latest episode of The Herbalist's Path is all about herbal first aid essentials. The must have essentials I keep in my kit and why.

The best party trick on the trail involves stinging nettles and a little bit of bravery. 😄

Those stinging hairs are mostly on the underside of the leaf. Fold it so they tuck inward, and suddenly you have a little pocket of one of the most nutritious plants on the planet, ready to eat straight off the stem.

Chlorophyll. Iron. Calcium. Magnesium. All of it, raw and alive and going straight into your body.

This one is NOT for everyone, so proceed with caution. But for the brave (err, the slightly crazy ones), the look on your friends’ faces when you do this makes it totally worth trying.

Have you ever eaten fresh nettles straight off the plant? Tell us all about it in the comments. 💚

Oh, and if you’re ready to learn more about the nutritional and medicinal benefits of Nettles, be sure to join us at the Nourishing Nettles Conference happening May 4-12, with **d & 20 other Herbalists sharing their knowledge of Nettles with you!

Drop NETTLES in the comments & I’ll send you all the details 🌱

Lavender in your first aid kit does a whole lot more than you might think, and it’s absolutely essential in mine.

A single drop of lavender essential oil can bring someone who’s in a state of panic back down to a calm, grounded state where they can think clearly instead of acting out of fear.

Maintaining calm isn’t just a bonus. It’s an essential skill in emergency situations.

In my latest podcast episode on The Herbalist’s Path you’ll learn about the must have herbs I’m always carrying in my first aid kit.

These are the same herbs I’ve turned to since my days as a backpacking guide, and how you can use them right when you need them.

Drop FIRST AID down below and I’ll send it right to you, or tune into The Herbalist’s Path on your favorite podcast player. 💚

Cleavers are one of my favorite spring w**ds to gather.
They show up right when you need them, when that heavy, stuck winter energy is slowing you down and your body is ready to move again.
Cleavers are one of the best herbs for getting that lymph flowing, clearing out the sluggishness, and giving your kidneys some love in the process.
And they’re fun to work with. Their sticky ways are always a good time when walking outside with unsuspecting friends. 😆
I talked about cleavers (and a few other medicinal spring favorites) on a recent podcast episode.

🌱Most people are afraid of Stinging Nettles, because, well, duh, it’s in her name. She stings!

But this is one of our most valuable and generous plants around.
She’s nourishing, powerful, gentle, loving, and generous. She just demands respect. A lesson many could learn from.

🌱If you’re ready to dive deeper on Nettles, I just recorded a 45-minute lesson on some of my favorite things about Nettles for the upcoming Nourishing Nettles Conference with Susun W**d and 19 other herbalists, all sharing their love of this plant. Drop the word NETTLES in the comments and I'll send you the link.

🎧And if you're a podcast person, my latest episode covers Nettles plus 3 other medicinal w**ds that everyone should know about. Find The Herbalist's Path wherever you listen, or drop WEEDS in the comments and I'll send you right to it.💚
