Below I share 10 key things to pay attention to and watch out for when vetting and looking for a safe facilitator-guide-healer-teacher....
After years in this work I have come to know amazing healers and ancestral medicine facilitators- even masters of this work who I feel incredibly fortunate to know and now call my teachers. This gift has furthered my own work in ancestral medicine beyond comparison - however, prior to this I had to go through my fair share of false healers and facilitators who further traumatized me leading me to have to do even more work to now not only heal from past traumas but also now trauma inflicted by them too. This felt like an initiation for me in and of itself- however, I share this in hopes to share what I have learned and decrease the number of people being traumatized and manipulated wrongly in these spaces by false and improperly trained "facilitators".
Just because someone has sat with ayahuasca, bufo, pe**te, etc. and knows some of the traditional indigenous medicine songs- it does not make them equipped or qualified to serve medicine to anyone. So, what should we be looking for when we are open to finding a qualified teacher-facilitator-healer?
I know way too many in the medicine community falsely claiming themselves to be "given permissions" to do this work. A good musician does not make a qualified healer and psychic surgeon- and that is what these spaces are: psychic surgery and being a pure channel for the work of the divine.
This takes years and years of hard and dedicated work and devotion. Most do not make it all the way through because of how demanding, vigorous, and involved it all is. This isn't just a training program where you receive a diploma or certification. It is a restructuring of your entire being and life so it is fully aligned and channels are properly cleared and aligned with the divine. It is a full commitment for life to the divine- to be a servant, student, channel, and devotee. If those channels are not properly cleared then so much energetic impurity can show up in the space and be passed on to all who are in that space.
It is important that all who enter into these spaces have an awareness of how detrimental and serious this truly is... you are opening your being, energy, channels, and putting full trust into whoever is guiding that space. You want a facilitator that has done the appropriate work to support your highest good, health, evolution, and life.
So, how can we ensure that whatever space we are showing up in is safe? Because we are quite literally putting our life in someone's hands when we choose a facilitator - healer- teacher- or guide. It is serious, real, and should be considered with the utmost respect and diligence.
Here are 10 things to watch out for an consider before your next sit with any ancestral medicine facilitator:
๐ฅ1. How many years of dedicated personal healing with these medicines do they have prior to becoming a facilitator?
*It is easy for anyone to claim they've been given the correct permissions and then put on a performance or show for you... however, the real work is in the personal commitment, development, necessary initiations, regular diets and cleanings, and healing of karmic programs from their field. If they haven't dedicated at least 10 years (& still continuing) to personal self work and devotion to their clearing/cleaning/healing to receive the necessary intimations and wisdom- then I don't want it. It is fundamental your practitioner has done their own work before stepping into guiding you through yours. Otherwise it can be dangerous, pass on energetic impurities, and even further traumatize you.
๐ฅ2. Who are their teachers? How often do they work with said teacher?
*A student can only become as good as their teacher. Having good quality teachers in this work is fundamental. Also having a strong relationship with their teacher that is ongoing for many years is important. This knowledge is passed on from teach to student through hardworking, transference, and initiation. The way an ancestral medicine space is held is greatly influenced by the capacity of the healer and guide. A good teacher knows how to cut through and challenge the ego. Having a teacher that keeps the ego in check is fundamental as this work is the work of spirit. When the ego gets in the way and even becomes spiritual ego it can become, once again, dangerous.
๐ฅ3. How do they carry themselves through every day life?
*True wisdom is embodied and it is practiced in every day life. It shows up in how someone communicates, how someone nourishes themselves, their habits and practices, how they make those around them feel, and how they act and move through life without words but in action and energy. Energy and action speak louder than words. Pay attention to a facilitator you are vetting- do they truly show up and embody what they teach and preach? Anyone can say anything but who we are in our every day life is what transfers, heals, and makes a difference. If energy is not aligned and cleared it can show up in medicine spaces and cause disharmony. We need clean, clear, present, and embodied healers and facilitators... not preachers and performers.
๐ฅ4. Are they having their clients/patients fill out intake forms and moving them through thorough consultation processes prior to serving?
*There needs to be a thorough process in place prior to working with medicines for the safety of every person who sits with ancestral medicine. I see this leak through especially with people serving medicine for f1nancial reasons over ethical ones. It is important that a facilitator/healer knows the medical stance of every person in their space- medical history, medications they are on, mental health history, trauma history, etc. If your facilitator is not prioritizing this and is instead urging you to sit then this should be taken as a huge red flag- your safety is NOT their priorty. There are many contraindications with any medicine- regardless of which ancestral medicine- she as severe as lifetime injury and even death. If contraindications have not been asked about then the answer is NO- find another facilitator.
๐ฅ5. Are they trauma-informed?
*A trauma-informed practitioner is someone who understand the impacts of trauma in each unique individuals life. They take an individualized and personalized approach to each client/patient according to that person's trauma and needs. It is an understanding of how trauma can impact the psyche, body, and energetics of an individual. They have practices in place that are held with awareness to be conscious that their spaces are not going to further traumatize someone. They have a variety of tools and resources to choose from that they are both trained in but also have practiced and embodied themselves in order to properly initiate someone. A good facilitator has been through the depths of their own traumas and transmuted them. They understand how to navigate said trauma and hold appropriate space to walk someone through how to heal and do it themselves too.
๐ฅ6. What is steering the ship of your facilitator? What is the driving force behind the work they're offering?
*The ONLY thing that should be steering the ship of your facilitator is god/divine/great mystery/spirit. The biggest red flag I see often is when m*ney becomes the driving factor... and I see it far too often. When m*ney and building a bus1n3ss becomes the main driver of any ceremony/retreat/healing session then I urge you to run far far away. Does your facilitator have other main means of income? Do they consider m*ney above ethics and safety? Do they urge you to sit in their ceremonies so they can fill them up as a means to make more m*ney? If your safety the space being prioritized and are you truly being cared for and your healing being prioritized above m*ney? I understand m*ney is an energetic exchange and I don't believe facilitators shouldn't be charging for their services. However, when the first concern in a space is being made is f1nances instead of the healing of participants this can result in dangerous and further traumatizing situations for many involved due to impure intentions.
๐ฅ7. Is this facilitator boosting your ego or helping to keep it in check?
*I have seen this one time and time again- boosting clients/patients egos as a means of manipulation and control. They use this tactic of playing on your ego in order to make you feel a false sense of empowerment so they can then get you to do what they want and take advantage of you. A true facilitator/teacher/guide will instead have a loving and direct way of cutting through the ego. They will keep your ego in check and show you where your blindspots are in correlation to your ego as a means of helping empower you. It is so important in this work that ego stays in check and especially important we aren't relying on facilitators guiding through spiritual ego. A good teacher is real, connected, and able to help you transmute go... not boost it. This work is directed by God/spirit NOT the ego.
๐ฅ8. Do they respect your boundaries and ask for consent?
*You should have the ability and authority to say no at any given moment. There is an important relationship to consent that must be respected in this work. Your facilitator should always ask for consent and respect your wishes. If they are forcing, pushing, manipulating you to take medicine in anyway then run away. This work with these medicines requires your free-will to be in charge and in effect. When you sit with these medicines it needs to be entirely your choice. However many cups of medicine you sit with needs to be your choice. If this is not being respected and being take seriously then your own sovereignty is at risk. A server should never urge you to do anything you aren't ready for or don't feel called to do. If your choices are not being respected then this space doesn't are about you- only their own personal agendas.
๐ฅ9. Do they have support and integration practices in place for themselves and also for you after ceremonies?
*Sitting in an ancestral medicine ceremony is only a small portion of the work. While these medicines can be very healing and transformative- they are really only the revealers. The rest of the work after what has been revealed is up to you. This requires much time, space, rest, and practice to properly integrate into every day life. Integration requires patience, devotion, repatterining, and being responsible and accountable for ourselves in every day life. Is your facilitator taking their own integration seriously? Are they advancing and truly integrating their own shadows? Are they open to receiving feedback about their own blindspots? Do they have practices in place in their every day life that helps them evolve and embody what they are teaching? And are they offering that integration work and support back to those they are serving medicine to? Because if not- then there is a large portion of the necessary work in these spaces missing. 90% of the work lies in integration.
๐ฅ10. Do they show up and truly care for you outside of the medicine spaces?
*It is one thing to put on a facade and show up in a medicine space as a healer- it is entirely another if they are also showing up for you outside of medicine spaces. DO they show up for you in your time of need? Do they check in on you and care for your wellbeing? If something traumatic happened to you in their space outside of the medicine ceremony- how would they show up in that situation? Are they truly equipped to handle trauma and be present in it? Are they triggered by uncomfortable conversations or events? Are they able to stay present with you when you share uncomfortable things with them? Do they disregard your trauma as something that could have been worse? How do they hold you, support you, and are there for you and those around them in every day life? Facilitators don't have to be your best friend- in fact often there are boundaries there for a reason- but what they should be is authentically embodied in their love, care, presence, honesty, humility, and service.

It is important that we recognize our power within these spaces. We have the authority and ability to choose who we sit with. There are so many false facilitators that will put on a show and performance but who are they really behind closed doors when no one is watching? Really take your time: watch, observe, listen, be patient, have boundaries, challenge their narrative, and see how they respond. With time all gets revealed in the end. There is no need to rush into this work with anyone. Your safety should be first priority. Make sure you are vetting your facilitators thoroughly for the safety of your well-being and your life. It is fundamental to the true evolution of your consciousness and being. You deserve nothing but the best of the best. Don't settle for anything less. This is some of the most important work you will ever do in this life time if you choose to walk it and do it. Make sure those you follow are leading you in the right direction.
Choosing a facilitator - healer -teacher is like choosing the correct surgeon! You want someone equipped with true real experience. Someone who cares for your healing and wellbeing and has taken their own path with the medicine seriously. This work cannot happen on a whim. This work is a commitment to true service, proper initiation, and aligning with the divine counsel.
