The time has come to start working on the new (or maybe I should say redo) strawberry patch for planting. Plugs are coming soon.

We weren’t planning on doing this whole section, but with the really cold and wet spring, we lost too many plants in the side that wasn’t slated for replant, so we just did it all.

This time we are orienting our rows in a different direction (N/S vs old way W/E) in hopes this way will allow for better water drainage into the yard so the strawberry feet don’t stay as wet. The mounds are a bit higher too.

It seems we like to do this work when the heat and humidity have returned vs. doing it when cool and low humidity. 🙄

If you ever wondered how we got our name, this is how. I know it can be confusing as the city of Fairview isn’t too far away, but it has nothing to do with that.

In the past you’d have to go to Avon to see it, now there is one at the Penfield Rec Park too.

We stopped out there Sunday afternoon and many flowers were getting close to peak (meaning the center head hadn’t formed yet, heads are still upwards) and some still need to open. Now is the time to go visit a sunflower field for free and grab some photos….we did.

Went to grab a pen out of the drawer to write down this week’s orders….and this was waiting for me. I don’t know where it came from, but it seems like a very fitting pen for a farmer to use!! 🥕🫑🍓🍐🫐🥬 You press the tongue for on / off (wish people had that feature 🤪). A very simple way to bring a smile to the day!! 😁

Have you wanted to farm but felt stuck or that you couldn't because you don't have much (or no) equipment, land, infrastructure, etc? If so you might find this event to be what you need to help you get started.

Nathan and family will be headed to "The Gathering at Polyface 2026" event happening next weekend at Joel Salatin's Polyface Farm (presented by The Stockman Grass Farmer) as he is 1 of the 8 farmers that will be speaking about his story and starting a farm. That's pretty cool!!

Just happen to be outside when the wagon went down the farm lane because the GoodYear blimp went over the house as it headed back home. Don’t see it as much as we use to so it’s always cool when that happens.

With the clouds and rain Sunday night, it was the time to move indoors to knock out some more jams. It really is hard to be at the stove on nice sunny days!

This time the 2 fruits I dislike the most to process—elderberries and currants. They take so long. With currants you have to take the berry cluster off the bush (it doesn’t work well to just pull it off so must be cut) then take the berries off each stem. Elderberries are somewhat the same process but they are definitely easier to get off the bush and they come off the stem a little faster….but still seems not fast enough.

So…..
🫙 Elderberry Jelly sold out last week but is restock just in time.
🫙 Blueberry Currant Jam (which is added pectin free, if that matters to you, currants have a lot of their own pectin) is finally back in stock after a hiatus.

The blueberries, currants and elderberries are all grown on the farm and as with everything else here, it’s organically grown. 😋

We almost always have basil, but it’s a first for this one —
We now have Tulsi/ Holy Basil bunches in the farm store. 🌿🌿

Tulsi is a medicinal basil, not a culinary basil. And the smell of this one is different than regular basil….and it smells yummy!

The taste of it is different too. There are a few varieties of holy basil and many have a strong spicy clove taste to them. This variety has that in the background but the flavor most often given is bubblegum.

If you know what this herb does, you know its value, but if you don’t it has some great properties you should know about. I won’t list them all here, you can do a search to find that info, but stress relief is one of them.

Summer time is super busy here on the farm, so this summer to help deal with all that craziness, it has been enjoyed as an herbal iced tea, mixed in with some fresh lemon balm, spearmint and lemon juice …. sometimes with hibiscus and/or stinging nettle.

Bunches sold fresh. You can use it fresh for tea making or dry it for tea later or make a tincture. 🌿

The first sowing of buckwheat in the strawberry patch is in full bloom…maybe just a bit past.

We use buckwheat as a crop crop because it grows fast but also adds organic matter back into the soil….because growing organically is more than just not spraying chemicals. We are building soil and feeding the soil life. Healthy crops come from healthy soil.

If you were wondering, no buckwheat doesn’t look like wheat at all, it actually gets its name because the seed pod you can see that it forms looks a lot like the beechnut tree ‘nut’. After all the seeds develop on the buckwheat, they would harvest it to grind into flour. Buckwheat flour is gluten free.

Along with it giving to the soil (after it’s tilled into it), it’s currently giving the pollinators & honeybees some yummy stuff. And if a stem of white flowers is need for an arrangement, it works for that. And….its kind of cool to have a big patch of flowers in your backyard too. 😁 Buckwheat for the win!! 💚
