Elder Abuse is a topic no one likes to discuss, but it is necessary to bring awareness to. We are very fortunate to have community partners like Margate Police Dept and Jewish Community Center to host events like this. Please consider attending as this may help you spot the signs of elder abuse and prevent it for your family and friends.

Angelic Hospice has amazing community partners, one of which is Gateway Regional High School Key Club! The Key Club showed their generosity and compassion by donating several plants to gift to families who recently lost loved ones. These family caregivers have sacrificed so much to care for their family members and we want to take a minute to honor them. This is just a few of the hundreds of families we see every day sharing their love and devotion to a family member who needs their care and attention.

Understanding the difference between Palliative and Hospice Care is important. You may have heard: "All Hospice is Palliative Care, but not all Palliative Care is Hospice." That is a very true statement. The terms are frequently confused, and the word "Hospice" usually stokes fear, while "Palliative" is hospice's friendly cousin.
The truth is, Hospice is a BENEFIT and a SERVICE provided by our company which specializes in palliative care for those who qualify. To qualify for this benefit, which is paid 100% by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurances, you must have a life-limiting illness; and based on the progression of that illness, have a prognosis of 6 months or less. So, what is a "Prognosis"? It is your and our doctor's best estimate of someone's remaining life span based on the information we have. That's it.
Can you live longer than 6 months? - YES.
Can you live less than 6 months? - YES.
Only God knows the date and time of our passing- the rest of us are just guessing.
Does Palliative or Hospice Care "speed up" someone dying? - NO.
In fact, several studies indicate that people live an additional month longer on average when receiving these services because of the quality of care that is provided.
As time goes on, we all move closer to the end of our lives. The best thing we can do for ourselves, and our families, is to understand what is available and take advantage of it at the right time. Don't wait until the last minute- CALL TODAY!

If you are a caregiver for a family member with a serious illness, two critical pieces of advice we can give you are as follows.
1. Take care of yourself FIRST. As Chris Gregas, one of our spiritual care advisors, and author, says, "Use the oxygen mask method. Put your oxygen mask on first so you can help others around you."
2. Get the expert help you need when you need it. Most people wait to call us for palliative or hospice care until after they are completely exhausted. While we are happy to help, the best time to call is early on when we can help you put the right tools in place to avoid exhaustion and breakdown. Do you only service your care after it breaks down? If you do, it is much more costly and much less effective.

When I read this in Proverbs this morning, I immediately thought of the team of Angelic employees. Not only do they do a difficult job with grace, but they "refresh" the patients and families they serve. "Refresh" means to "give new strength or energy to". That perfectly describes this caring team of professionals. If you need to be refreshed, call us today. After spending some time with our team, you will know the true meaning of refreshed.

Our volunteers bring joy to many of our patients and families. But the furry volunteers like Bronx add a little extra joy. We are very grateful for our volunteers and the service they provide to our patients. Thanks Bronx!
