I harvested some of these beauties yesterday in my community garden

Purple dead nettle ( Lamium purpureum-the devouring purple monster)

In the mint family she has a square juicy stem. Pyramidal shaped structure with opposite leaves. Pink purple flowers that are lipped, attached petals look like mini orchids. The top leaves are tinged purple. She likes to grow near ant hills, telling me she has a symbiotic relationship with the soil and the ants that are loosening compacted soil.

She grows in clumps with her sisters reaching towards the sky.

The tops are a bit fuzzy but the flavor is green. She is cooling. Her purple tops tell me she helps open your crown.

Full of vitamin C, minerals and iron. Traditionally she has been used for wound care, she is a vulnerary. She is said to help to support your body's immune system to fight viruses. Purple dead nettle helps your body deal with histamines, supporting you through allergy season. She has a reputation of being antibacterial, antiflamatory and antifungal.

Experiments will commence. Some are being dried for tea. Some will be made into tincture, vinegar and oil. Of course we have all been munching on them! Let's see what else this lovely lady can reveal.

I have worked with a lot of people who experience migraines. Some start as tension headaches and progress. Some are from stress, anxiety or insomnia. Massage helps all of these triggers. As an herbalist I encourage clients to keep health journals, it is a great way to see what is triggering your health.

Migraine headaches, a common ailment, can be severe and debilitating. Research shows massage therapy may be a promising alternative to migraine medication.
