There's a version of giving up on chronic pain treatment that nobody talks about.
It doesn't happen dramatically. It happens quietly. After one too many appointments that produced nothing useful. After one too many specialists who reviewed the same imaging and reached the same inconclusive answer. After one too many mornings of getting your hopes up and one too many evenings of wondering why you keep trying.
So you stopped trying. Not because you accepted the pain. But because the process of looking for answers had become its own source of exhaustion on top of everything else.
At Southwest Ohio Pain Institute in West Chester, Ohio, we hear this regularly from new patients. They didn't give up on getting better. They gave up on a system that had given them no reason to keep going back to it.
The distinction matters clinically. A patient who has stopped seeking care because the system failed them is different from a patient whose pain has no solution. In most cases, the path forward is not more of what didn't work. It's a different kind of evaluation — one that starts by asking the questions the previous providers didn't ask.
You haven't run out of options. You may simply not have had the right evaluation yet.
