Struggle with recurring heel pain but not exactly sure what triggers it? These are some of the most common reasons heel pain flares back up:
🏂 Starting a new fitness activity - Sometimes it is just a matter of getting used to new movements and easing yourself into a new routine, but other times it may be the activity itself that is causing a real problem. When you decide to try a new workout, make sure that you warm up thoroughly, learn proper form, and wear supportive footwear.
🏃 Changes of intensity in activities - Even if you walk or run regularly, changing the intensity of your workouts can trigger plantar fasciitis. Sprinting when you normally jog, or power walking when you usually walk at a leisurely pace will put an added strain on your feet that your body isn’t used to.
🦵 Tight calf muscles - The muscles in the calves (specifically the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles) are directly connected with tendons and ligaments in the foot, including the plantar fascia ligament.

What causes heel spurs?

The exact cause of heel spurs has been difficult to determine. Some believe that the natural process of aging has a hand in developing heel spurs. In addition to the higher tendency for older individuals to have calcium deposits forming excess small bony parts, aging itself can cause stiffness of the heel pad and decrease its ability to soften the force endured during impacts, leading to repetitive stress and microtrauma which eventually contribute to the bony development.

Genetics may also well play a role in developing heel spurs; some people have a genetic predisposition for new bone formation responding to a certain level of mechanical stressors, which explains why other people don’t develop spurs even when subjected to the same or greater level of mechanical stress.

Struggling with heel pain? Give this stretch a try:

Stand facing a wall with both feet together. Place your hands at shoulder height and width on the surface of the wall to support your weight. Take a big step forward with your right foot so that it is close to the wall. Shift your weight onto your right leg and bend it slowly at the knee. Keeping both heels on the ground, lean your upper body slowly toward the wall until you feel a good stretch happening along the calf muscles of your left leg. Hold the stretch for twenty to thirty seconds.

Return to your original position with both feet together. Repeat the stretch, this time putting your left leg forward. Do this exercise three times on each foot.

💡 Heel Pain & Rheumatoid Arthritis: What You Should Know

Did you know that up to 90% of people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience foot or heel pain? One common cause is Plantar Fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the arch of the foot—and RA can make you more vulnerable to it.

Here’s what to watch for:
✅ Heel pain that’s worst in the morning
✅ Swelling, redness, or tenderness on the bottom of the foot
✅ Pain that eases with movement, but returns later
✅ Limping or difficulty walking

Because RA affects joints and soft tissues, it can weaken foot structures and make conditions like Plantar Fasciitis, bunions, and hammer toes more likely.

The good news? Relief is possible.
✔️ Use orthotics to support your arch and cushion your heel
✔️ Try heel wraps, ice therapy, and gentle stretching
✔️ Rest when you can and consider night splints for extra support
✔️ Talk to your doctor about pain relief options like NSAIDs
