We have decided to create this page as a way for people to keep up with updates on Carl if they would like to because trying to keep up with who knows what in 100 different group texts outside of immediate family can get overwhelming! We appreciate the outpouring of love and support for him and invite you to follow along on his road to recovery.
On November 16th my dad went to Los Angeles to have 4 disc replaced in his neck. What was supposed to be a relatively easy surgery with a short recovery time has turned into a hard fight and a long road to recovery for him.

He woke up from the surgery with no feeling from the chest down. He was rushed back to the OR after imaging confirmed a hematoma and bone fragment compressing his spinal cord. The doctors were able to remove the bone fragment and he was taken to neuro ICU. 5 days later he was struggling to breathe and they decided to intubate. Shortly after intubation he coded. Fortunately after 2 minutes of CPR and lots of medical intervention they were able to stabilize him. He was taken for a chest CT the next morning which showed bilateral pulmonary emboli. He was then taken for an emergency thrombectomy where the doctor was able to remove the blood clot on the right side but not the left. He was intubated for 5 days until they decided to do a tracheostomy. After 2 more days of being on the ventilator he was weaned off and finally able to breath without the use of the machine. After 19 days in NICU he graduated to the main floor where he’s continuing to improve and able to start therapy. Hopefully in the next few days he will be transferred to a rehab center.

Things are looking brighter every day. Our entire family greatly appreciates the outpouring of prayers and kindness from friends while we navigate my dad’s new normal for now.
Thank you to everyone who has sent him goodies, taken food to my siblings and checked up on them while our parents are hundreds of miles away, and kept him in your daily prayers.
Each day brings new hope and we are committed to keeping the faith he will be back to doing the things he loves to do soon!

I will do my best to keep this updated as much as possible! - Halle
