Nearly every week we have someone come in who has had numerous MRI’s, X-rays, CT scans, they’ve seen neurologists and headache specialists, and been on powerful medications…..and yet they’re still suffering from horrible headaches without any answer’s as to WHY.
Sadly, what we often see with these cases is that these tests were done to rule out things like tumors or structural deformities, but the delicate positioning of the base of the skull and the cervical vertebrae was overlooked or ignored. This is a crucial mistake, because even minor shifts in this structure can irritate the musculature, connective tissue, and nerve roots at the base of the skull and wrapping back up into the head.
Oftentimes, Dr. Gary will find that that the positioning of their cervical vertebrae is significantly off from the recognized norms. So many times what you’ll see, is that the base of the skull and the top bone in the neck are not sitting completely parallel to each other as needed. There can also be lateral flexion or rotational misalignments. If there is a history of whiplash, or any sudden injuries to the neck involving a rotational force, you’ll often see Alar ligament instability, which is a common cause of irritation to the nerves triggering headaches.
C2, or the Axis vertebrae, needs to have a very precise positioning or it can cause irritation triggering headaches. If this segment shifts into a flexed misalignment, it can create significant forward head posture, or “Text Neck”, triggering both headaches as well as chronic tension across the neck and upper back and shoulders.
A loss of the normal cervical lordosis, or the “C” shape you need to have when viewing the neck from the side is another extremely common cause of headaches due to the tension that it creates on the cervical muscles and nerves.
While migraines are common, they are NOT normal. Reach out to the office if you'd like to see if chiropractic care could help you!
