𦴠May is Arthritis Awareness Month β and with over 100 types of arthritis and more than 58 million Americans affected, this one hits close to home for a lot of families.
Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States. And yet, it's one of the most misunderstood conditions out there.
Most people think of Osteoarthritis (OA) β the wear-and-tear kind that affects knees, hips, and hands. But arthritis also includes Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Psoriatic Arthritis, which are autoimmune conditions where the body's immune system attacks its own joints, causing pain, swelling, and fatigue that can affect the whole body.
π‘οΈ Prevention starts earlier than you think:
OA is common as we age, but it's not inevitable. You can protect your joints by:
β Staying active β movement truly is medicine
β Maintaining a healthy weight to reduce joint load
β Limiting foods that fuel inflammation: red meat, highly processed foods, and sugar
β Loading up on anti-inflammatory foods: berries, leafy greens, wild salmon, whole grains, and olive oil
π Already dealing with joint pain or stiffness?
Motion is lotion! Regular gentle movement, hot and cold therapies, and judicious use of over-the-counter pain relievers can all help. But if you're looking for something that goes deeper than symptom management, acupuncture is worth a serious look.
π©Ί Acupuncture for arthritis β what the research shows:
Studies have found that acupuncture can meaningfully reduce joint pain and stiffness, decrease inflammation, and improve physical function in people with both OA and RA. For many patients, it also reduces the need for pain medications. It works by stimulating the body's natural anti-inflammatory responses and improving circulation to affected joints β and it pairs especially well with movement and lifestyle changes as part of a whole-person approach.
Whether you're trying to prevent joint problems or manage an existing diagnosis, we're here to help.
