Let's clear up some GLP-1 misinformation.đ
There's a myth online that grinds my gears: that GLP-1 medications are "forever drugs," and the second you stop, all your weight comes roaring back.
As a physician who manages these conditions every dayânot true.
Here's what IS true:
These medications help you lose weight and treat what's driving the gain in the first place, like insulin resistance. And yesâthey can be stopped, when it's done right.
Think about blood pressure meds. When your pressure is controlled, we don't declare you cured and disappearâwe check in every few months to keep you on track. GLP-1s deserve that same follow-up.
The people who regain weight are usually the ones who lose it, then vanish for a year with no specialist care. That's not the medication failing. That's a gap in care.
Under the watchful eye of an experienced provider, the story is different. Once you hit your goals and your metabolic health is steady, the medication can be stoppedâand you lean into the nutrition and lifestyle habits you built when the "food noise" finally quieted down.
Could a little weight return? Possibly. But here's what the fearmongers leave out: if you regain even 2â3%, we simply restart the dose that worked beforeâlong before you're back to square one. Nobody has to white-knuckle through 50 pounds of regain to prove a point.
These medications are a tool. Used with expertise and real follow-up, they're a powerful one.
