When it comes to feeding, appearance doesn't always tell the whole story đŸ€

A visible tongue tie doesn't automatically mean feeding will be affected. What matters most is how your baby is functioning.

How does the tongue move? How is your baby coordinating feeding? Are they feeding comfortably and efficiently?

These answers often tell us much more than appearance alone.

At Connecting Dots Therapy, we focus on understanding the whole picture so families can make informed decisions about what support may be needed.

Because feeding isn't just about what you see. It's about how everything works together ✹

A lot of parents turn to rice cereal because they’re trying to help their baby with reflux, spit-up, or feeding struggles đŸŒ

And while it may seem like thickening the milk would help keep feeds down better, it can actually make feeding harder for some babies.

When milk becomes thicker, babies often have to work harder to get the milk out of the bottle. That extra effort can increase tension, air intake, and feeding fatigue, which may lead to even more GI discomfort.

Things like feeding coordination, swallowing patterns, oral function, and tension can all play a role in how comfortable and efficient feeding feels for your baby.

If feeding has been stressful or confusing, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Send us a message, and let’s help you get to the root of what’s really going on ✹

Feeding cues are one of the first ways your baby communicates with you đŸ«¶

Before crying begins, babies often show smaller signs that they’re hungry or ready to feed. Learning to recognize these cues can help feeding feel more calm, responsive, and connected for both you and your baby.

Some common feeding cues can include:
‱ bringing hands to mouth
‱ rooting or turning toward touch
‱ opening their mouth
‱ stirring or becoming more alert
‱ sucking on hands or fingers

Understanding your baby’s cues can help you feel more confident responding to their needs and better understand what they’re trying to communicate.
