We often imagine trauma as something dramatic and obvious.
But the aftermath isn't always loud.
Sometimes it looks like withdrawing from people you love.
Sometimes it's being constantly on edge.
Sometimes it's difficulty sleeping.
Sometimes it's feeling disconnected from yourself.
Sometimes it's becoming unusually sensitive to sounds, situations or reminders of something that happened.
Trauma responses can vary greatly from person to person, and physical and emotional reactions can show up long after the original event.
This is why compassion matters.
We don't always know what someone else is carrying.
And sometimes, we don't even fully understand what we are carrying.
