We want to ensure that providers who prescribe topical pain medications, OPA members who compound these medications, and Ohio Medicaid patients who currently benefit from them are aware of changes the Ohio Department of Medicaid and Gainwell (Ohio Medicaid’s Single PBM) intend to implement effective July 1.

Under the new policy, Ohio Medicaid plans to eliminate coverage for multi-ingredient compounded topical pain medications. For many patients, these customized therapies provide an important treatment option that may help manage pain while avoiding or reducing the need for systemic medications that can carry greater risks or side effects.

Removing coverage limits patient and provider treatment options and may disproportionately impact patients with complex pain management needs who rely on individualized compounded therapies when commercially available products are not appropriate.

OPA continues to advocate for policies that preserve patient access to clinically appropriate care and support pharmacists’ and technicians' role in delivering personalized treatment solutions.

👏 Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee just signed the FAIR Rx Act into law.

“This legislation simply gives these health care giants a choice — you can be a PBM or you can be a pharmacy, but you can’t be both. The FAIR Rx Act provides structural change that strikes at the crux of that conflict,” says NCPA CEO Douglas Hoey. “We applaud the governor and legislators for their courage, withstanding tremendous pressure from the PBM-insurer lobby to pass this bill and defend Tennessee’s patients, taxpayers, and pharmacies.”
