Honoring Our Plasma Donors

On World Blood Donor Day, we’re celebrating the essential bond between donors and the bleeding disorders community. For many living with these conditions, treatment is only possible through this life-sustaining partnership.

For those who have never donated, it’s important to know just how much of an impact your plasma can have. Clotting factors are derived directly from donated plasma to replace the proteins needed to prevent bleeds and protect joints, and it can take hundreds of donations to provide just one year of treatment for a single patient.

To those who roll up their sleeves: Thank you. Your generosity is the literal lifeblood of our community.

LUX Infusion is proud to attend the Texas Bleeding Disorders Conference (TBDC) in Austin, Texas, from June 12–14.

TBDC is a collaborative event hosted by the Lone Star Bleeding Disorders Foundation and Texas Central Bleeding Disorders, bringing together patients, caregivers, advocates, and healthcare professionals from across the state. We are honored to support this community and look forward to the conversations, connections, and shared commitment to improving the lives of those affected by bleeding disorders.

If you’re attending, we would love the opportunity to connect.

Mapping TMEM16F To Understand Bleeding Disorders

Investigators at Weill Cornell Medicine have captured near-atomic-scale images of TMEM16F, a protein that acts as a molecular “flare” to signal blood coagulation, potentially offering a structural blueprint for a new generation of therapies.

Study senior author Alessio Accardi commented, “An activator of TMEM16F could be used, for example, as a pro-coagulant to treat patients with Scott Syndrome or other bleeding disorders, while an inhibitor could be used as an anticoagulant – among many other potential applications.”

February 2026 marks exactly one century since Dr. Erik Adolf von Willebrand first described the condition that bears his name.

But despite 100 years of progress, research indicates that very few of the 1 in 1000 people that are estimated to have clinically significant VWD have actually been diagnosed. Why the diagnostic gap? One paper summarizes:

• VWD is often overlooked by non-hematologists, so diagnostic delays may exceed 14 years for women and girls.

• Diagnosis requires specialized testing that remains inaccessible in many regions.

• Heavy menstruation is often either stigmatized or normalized rather than properly investigated.

The paper’s authors propose a better way forward: “As we enter the second century of VWD, it is imperative to increase awareness, prioritize equity, promote early and accurate diagnosis through standardized, easy-to-use BATs, and harness precision medicine, including accessible VWF assays, genetic testing, and individualized therapies.”

It’s easy to look at a vial of medication and see it as a product of science. But for many in the BD community, that vial represents something much more personal—a quiet partnership with thousands of strangers.

Jennifer Lynne lives with VWD. Her recent article in Hemophilia News Today offers a helpful perspective on the “invisible” reality of plasma-derived therapies. “To create just a single dose of a therapy like Humate-P, plasma must be pooled from thousands of individual donations. When I infuse, I am not relying on one hero; I am relying on an entire stadium of them.

Because it can be difficult to grasp the importance of plasma donation until you hear an individual’s story, we encourage you to help spread the word by sharing this piece.

The BD community is notoriously tight-knit, built on decades of shared experience. But what happens when your diagnosis arrives unexpectedly in your 70s?

Acquired hemophilia is a rare condition affecting only about 1 in a millian people. Unlike inherited hemophilia, it often appears later in life without warning, triggered when the immune system mistakenly attacks Factor VIII.

In the linked article from Hemaware, “Bobby” Duc Tran, M.D. a hematologist and CMO at Hemophilia of Georgia weighs in on how the sudden shift can leave patients feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from traditional support networks. At LUX Infusion, we believe that even the rarest diagnosis deserves the full strength of the BD community.

Some of our patients return home from service facing ongoing health challenges and complex conditions that require expert care and support.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country, while also recognizing the veterans and families we are privileged to care for every day.

To every veteran in our care, every family navigating life after service, and every member of our clinical team who supports them with compassion and respect, thank you.

Legislative updates have a direct effect on members of the Bleeding Disorders community. See below for highlights from the NBDF’s recent annual Washington Days:

• Leading up to the President’s proposed FY27 budget, there has been strong bipartisan support for bleeding disorders programs.

• Additional Senate and House added as cosponsors for the HELP Copays Act.

• NBDF (along with other BD alliances) advocated for work reporting requirement exemptions that have been recently incorporated into Medicaid law.

• NBDF continues with state-level advocacy with notable events in CA, CT, MA, MI, and VT.

Follow the NBDF link for more details on the progress of important initiatives. For those that can, join in the conversation—at LUX Infusion, we believe patients should be considered first in every policy discussion.

As summer approaches, many are planning their next adventure—but for those in the bleeding disorders community, that means more than just an itinerary.

The LUX Infusion Checklist:
✅ Travel Letters and Medical Info: make sure your clinical documentation is updated for the TSA or emergencies; some may choose to wear a medical ID emblem.
✅ Medication and Supplies: consider bringing extra factor and don’t forget syringes, needles, and other related supplies.
✅ Storage: verify the temperature stability of your therapy for transit.
✅ Know Your HTCs: make a list of all those along your travel route (check the CDC’s domestic list, or WFH’s for international travel).

For more tips, check out the linked CDC article. And as the LUX Infusion network of infusion centers grows, we can also serve as a vital resource for the unexpected. Wherever your summer takes you, know that LUX Infusion will do everything to make sure you enjoy it safely.
