WHY DOES TWISTING BECOME MORE DIFFICULT AS WE AGE?
* Connective tissues stiffen: Fascia, ligaments, and tendons lose hydration and elasticity, making rotation feel tighter.
* Spinal discs lose fluid: The discs between the vertebrae gradually thin and dry out, reducing the spine’s ability to rotate comfortably.
* We move less in twisting patterns 🤔Daily life often becomes very forward focused: driving, phones, sitting, working. The body adapts to repetitiveness.
* Muscles become protective: Stress, injury, trauma or chronic tension can cause the nervous system to “guard” the body, especially around the hips, ribs, jaw and spine.
* Breathing changes: Shallow breathing reduces rib cage mobility, which directly affects spinal twisting.
* Strength and stability decline : Without core and postural support, the body resists deeper movement because it no longer feels safe there.
The beautiful thing is that twisting isn’t really about forcing range of motion. In yoga, twists are more about:
* creating space,
* nourishing the spine,
* improving circulation,
* and gently waking up the nervous system.
Aging well often has less to do with “staying flexible” and more to do with staying mobile, curious, and connected to the body.
This photo actually shows something important: a twist doesn’t need to look extreme to be effective. A long spine, relaxed breath and ease in the nervous system matter more than depth.
