Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injury (HAPI) prevention is a clinical and fiscal necessity, and recent studies analyzing over 168,000 patients underscore why (ISPOR 2026, TurnCare).

Compared to standard stays, HAPI patients face:

• 94% longer ICU stays
• 6X higher risk of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
• Over $100,000 in added annual costs

With costs exceeding over $400,000 per patient in the most severe ECMO populations, TurnCare’s new Guardian System is more crucial than ever. Discover how your facility can leverage the Guardian System to prevent sacral HAPIs, decrease unnecessary costs, and deliver a new standard of care at https://www.turncare.com/

The National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) recently concluded a successful two day advocacy visit to Capitol Hill (March 26–27, 2026). Our delegation met with key health policy advisors from House leadership, legislative directors from member offices, and a Principal Deputy Director at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

These productive discussions underscored strong alignment on the clinical and economic rationale for updating CMS policies to encourage early detection technology adoption. The visit marked an important step toward advancing formal reimbursement and regulatory reform requests.

In this episode of the NPIAP Podcast, Dr. Joyce Black sits down with NPIAP President, Dave Brienza, PhD, to unpack the evolving science behind medical support surfaces.

They discuss why standardizing terminology and performance metrics is essential for preventing pressure injuries, how test results can be misinterpreted, and the role of patient risk profiles in choosing the right surface. The conversation highlights the complexity of support‑surface selection and the ongoing need for clear standards to guide clinical decision‑making.
