Services for Independent Living, Inc. (SIL) SIL was founded in 1980 as Ohio’s first established Center for Independent Living

SIL provides an array of individual and community services designed to help and empower individuals of all ages and all disabilities lead healthy, productive lives and participate in community life as they choose. Individual services focus on providing individuals with disabilities access to information and skills needed to facilitate and enhance their independence and to remain in the community of choice. Community services are designed to address barriers to community living and promote the concept of independent living and choice. The majority of SIL Staff and a majority of SIL Board of Directors are individuals with disabilities. All SIL services are guided by the independent living philosophy and SIL’s mission which in turn supports the agency’s vision of a society that is accessible to all people.

Every October, we recognize Dwarfism Awareness Month—a time to educate, challenge stereotypes, celebrate diversity, and advocate for the rights and inclusion of people with dwarfism.

Dwarfism encompasses more than 200 medical and genetic conditions that result in short stature, with achondroplasia being the most common. People with dwarfism have diverse experiences, talents, ambitions, and abilities. Dwarfism does not define a person's worth, potential, or identity.

✨ This month, let's focus on:
🟢Awareness: Educating ourselves and others about dwarfism.
🟢Respect: Using respectful language and treating everyone with dignity.
🟢Inclusion: Promoting accessibility and equal opportunities in education, employment, healthcare, and public life.
🟢Understanding: Challenging harmful stereotypes, misconceptions, and discrimination.
🟢Celebration: Recognizing the voices, achievements, and contributions of people with dwarfism.

Let's make October a month of understanding, respect, acceptance, and celebration. Together, we can break down barriers, build awareness, and create a more accessible and inclusive world for people with dwarfism.
