How can you prevent the heart conditions we’ve been talking about? One of the best ways is simply through exercise! Exercise can help control risk factors associated with heart disease, like by lowering blood pressure and reducing inflammation in the body. Healthy adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week, but consult your doctor if you have any health concerns. Also, make sure to be aware of your blood pressure - if you are in an at risk range, your doctor may want you to monitor it at home.

We learned last week about how heart disease may impact women more than men. There is another inequality with heart disease - it disproportionately affects black women more than white women. Almost 59% of black women over 20 years old have heart disease and nearly 58% have high blood pressure. This blood pressure is often more severe in black people than in white and develops sooner. The reasons are likely multifactorial with socioeconomic and genetic factors. The main way to prevent this is to be on top of your health and see a doctor: learn the warning signs of a stroke or heart attack, keep track of your blood pressure, avoid smoking and minimize dietary salt.

Women often have worse outcomes than men after a cardiovascular event. This is likely multifactorial. For example, women tend to have different symptoms, men’s symptoms are oftentimes the ones that are traditionally taught, and conditions in women often aren’t noticed until they’re older. Also, women make up a smaller portion of clinical trials, as low as 20% at times, with women of color even more underrepresented. Recently, more research is being dedicated to address this disparity, but there is still a long way to go.
