🧬 Why doesn’t damaged knee cartilage simply heal itself?

Unlike many tissues in the body, articular cartilage is avascular, meaning it contains no blood vessels. This limits its direct access to the oxygen, nutrients, circulating cells, and biological signals involved in normal tissue repair.

That becomes especially important in osteoarthritis, where cartilage and the entire joint environment undergo progressive changes over time.
