47. 🎂 This picture is a long way from where the story started. If you only see the snapshot, you miss the grit—so let me share my journey with you.
When my family moved to the US from the Soviet Union, I was 12. My parents were 34 and 40, starting over from zero. We spent our first two years in a tiny 2-bedroom Brooklyn apartment on welfare and food stamps while my dad studied for his USMLEs and my mom went to community college to change careers. Back then, getting school clothes at the Gap felt like an unattainable luxury.
By my senior year of high school, my dad finished his residency. College and medical school were a mountain of student loans, but it was the price of admission to the future. At 24, I married a fellow immigrant who was grinding through 80-hour weeks as a junior lawyer while I was doing the exact same as a resident.
They call it the American Dream, but it’s really a story of education, relentless hard work, and perseverance. We started with zero and built an amazing life.
Thankful for where I came from, proud of where I am, and excited for where I’m going. 🥂 #47
