Mobility changes in dogs are not always dramatic.

You may notice hesitation before jumping, slower stairs, a different sitting position, shorter play sessions, or more time needed to get moving after rest. These changes do not automatically mean something serious, but they are worth noticing.

You know your dog’s normal better than anyone.

If something feels different, trust that observation and start a conversation with an appropriate provider.

Before we rush into a new month, take a moment to notice how your body is doing.

Are you moving comfortably?
Sleeping well?
Recovering after activity?
Carrying tension that has become so familiar you barely notice it?

You do not need to assume the worst or overhaul your routine.

Sometimes care begins by noticing what has changed and deciding it deserves your attention.

What has your body been asking for lately?

You do not have to wait until movement feels impossible to begin paying attention to your body or your dog’s mobility. Small changes in stiffness, recovery, stairs, jumping, gait, sleep, or willingness to move can be useful information.

Proactive care is not about chasing perfection or assuming every change is a crisis. It is about noticing patterns, understanding goals, and choosing appropriate support before discomfort begins limiting more of everyday life.

What is one movement or activity you want to continue enjoying for years to come?

Progress is not always dramatic.

Sometimes it looks like a dog getting into the car with a little less hesitation. Taking the stairs more confidently. Wanting to play again. Resting more comfortably. Or simply seeming more like themselves.

Those small moments matter because they are connected to the everyday things that help our animals enjoy their lives.

What is one small thing your pet does that immediately tells you they are having a good day?

Our bodies often communicate with us in small ways before something becomes impossible to ignore.

It may be stiffness that lasts longer than usual, feeling less comfortable during a familiar activity, needing more time to recover, or simply feeling like something is not quite right.

The same is true for our animals. They may hesitate before jumping, move more slowly on the stairs, shift how they sit, or lose interest in something they usually enjoy.

Listening does not mean assuming the worst. It means noticing changes with curiosity and giving ourselves permission to respond with care.

What has your body, or your animal’s body, been telling you lately?

No two people or animals arrive with the same history, goals, comfort level, or personality. One patient may want to get back to hiking. Another may want to make it through a workday more comfortably. One dog may be an enthusiastic greeter, while another needs time, space, and a much slower introduction.

That is why care should never feel like an assembly line. I listen, observe, and adapt each visit to the patient in front of me. The goal is not to force everyone into the same plan. It is to understand what matters to that individual and support them accordingly.

What is something that helps you feel truly cared for by a healthcare provider?

Dogs are incredibly good at adapting, which means changes in comfort may show up subtly. You may notice your dog pausing before the stairs, choosing the floor instead of the couch, taking longer to stand up, playing for shorter periods, changing how they sit, or seeming unusually restless or withdrawn.

These observations are valuable. You know what is normal for your dog, and you are often the first person to notice when something changes. If your dog does not seem like themselves, trust that instinct and begin the conversation with the appropriate member of their healthcare team.

Our bodies often give us small clues before something becomes impossible to ignore. Maybe you feel stiffer when you first stand up, need longer to recover after activity, turn your whole body instead of your neck, or notice that something you normally enjoy has become less comfortable.

These changes do not always mean something serious, but they are worth noticing. Paying attention early can help you make thoughtful choices about movement, rest, hydration, and support before discomfort begins shaping your entire day.

If your dog had an official job title, what would it be?

Chief Snack Inspector? Neighborhood Security Manager? Professional Nap Consultant? Director of Household Chaos? Senior Squirrel Surveillance Officer?

I spend a lot of time getting to know each dog’s body, movement, and comfort during chiropractic visits, but getting to know their very important household role is pretty fun too.

Tell me your dog’s name and official job title. Bonus points for making it ridiculously accurate! 🐾

Tika is definitely a professional nap consultant.

Dogs cannot tell us, “My back feels stiff today,” but they often communicate discomfort through changes in how they move or behave.

You might notice hesitation on stairs, difficulty getting into the car, less interest in playing, an unusual sitting position, or simply that they do not seem quite like themselves. One small change does not always mean something is wrong, but patterns are worth noticing.

What is the first sign you notice when your dog is not feeling like themselves?
