I’ve been thinking of what exactly I wanted to say, and I’m still struggling, but want to try to get out what I can about how much I am so proud of Sydney Calero! Her and I met first September 10, 2020 for her first appointment with her last son. At that time I did house visits for all my appointments as I wasn’t requiring women to come to me when I first got my birthing office/suite. She welcomed me into her home. Fed me Puerto Rican rice (and then she proceeds to choke on hers). Had an extravagant labor chart filled with all the good snacks and drinks. Her son even shared a birthday with my son. Months later after she delivered, she contacted me about becoming a student because she was strongly lead to become one ever since she was a little girl. Soon, she became my very first student. We learned from each other during this whole process. It was good for both of us, but also a pain for both of us at times.
On July 11, Sydney had her virtual graduation ceremony where I had the honor of “stoling” her with her ceremonial stole as a sacred lineage into midwifery. And….of course I braided her hair. For those that know, if we have time at a birth, you know she will be leaving there with her double French braids. 🥰 I was told that at this time we were supposed to give them a parting word, but it was a weird virtual ceremony and it was more for just her to hear and no one else. Honestly, at that point we were hungry and pretty much got off the live and went and ate. Lol! But, I want to give her these words…
“May your hands be steady, your heart be compassionate, and your wisdom continue to grow with every birth you attend.”
