(09/08/26) The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department is reporting that levels of EVD68 (mild to severe respiratory illness) are elevated and considered HIGH in the local community. COVID-19 and Norovirus are elevated and considered MEDIUM in the local community. Rotavirus, Influenza A & B, RSV, Parvovirus and Human Metapneumovirus have been detected in recent samplings and is considered LOW. Candida auris, Hepatitis A, West Nile Virus, H5 Influenza and Measles were not detected in recent samplings. These specific diseases and their identification as elevated in the Ohio County community are made through wastewater surveillance at the City of Wheeling’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The treatment plant serves most of Ohio County and Benwood.

As of September 3, 2026, 3,134 confirmed* measles cases were reported in the United States in 2026. Among these, 3,118 measles cases were reported by 47 jurisdictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. A total of 16 measles cases were reported among international visitors to the United States.

There have been 38 new outbreaks** reported in 2026, and 95% of confirmed cases (2,969 of 3,134) are outbreak-associated (1,594 from outbreaks starting in 2026 and 1,375 from outbreaks that started in 2025).

For the full year of 2025, a total of 2,289 confirmed* measles cases were reported in the United States. Among these, 2,263 measles cases were reported by 45 jurisdictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. (08/31/26) The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department is reporting that levels of Norovirus are elevated and considered MEDIUM in the local community. HUMAN SURVEILLANCE – TICKBORNE DISEASE
Through August 27, 2026, 2854 confirmed and probable cases of tickborne diseases (TBDs) were reported in West Virginia. The majority of cases (89.4%) were Lyme disease cases (n=2552). Several other tickborne diseases (TBD) were also reported including Alpha-Gal Syndrome, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis. All of West Virginia’s 55 counties have reported human TBD activity. The Alpha-gal Syndrome numbers here only reflect Confirmed and Probable cases while the OEPS Dashboard numbers include Confirmed, Probable and Suspect for Alpha-gal Syndrome.
