The Harvest Ritual
Traditionally, the herb was gathered at dawn on June 24, before the sun rose. As evening fell, bonfires were lit, and their smoke was used to purify the harvested plants, the people, and even the cattle, who were led across the fires or through the smoke. Once blessed by the saint's power in this way, the herb was tucked into protective amulets, hung above doorways, kept in animal stalls, and set aside for use throughout the year.

"All the Herbs of St. John"
The sense of complete protection this practice was meant to provide lives on in an old French expression: avoir toutes les herbes de la Saint-Jean — literally "to have all the herbs of St. John" — meaning to be fully prepared and safeguarded against whatever may come.
