"The Arthurian legends... turn upon the idea of a man drawing a sword. When the lady of the lake raises a phallus-sword for Arthur up out of the unconscious, we see how a man receives his mature masculine might from the hands of his Anima, his own inner feminine aspect. Unless he can accept his own tenderness, vulnerability, and sensitivity, he cannot be trusted with empowerment, and he cannot really receive his sword. The inner feminine works with the male structures to actually support and enhance a man's masculinity, enriching what would otherwise be an empty macho caricature of a male personality."
